Novak Djoković (6/4)

Admittedly, the Russian can’t compare to Djoković and his past success in Melbourne, but his performances in 2021 should lead you to believe that Medvedev has a chance.

Most notably, Medvedev won his maiden Grand Slam at the 2021 U.S. Open, where he defeated Djoković in the finals and denied the Serb from completing the collection. Besides that, Medvedev also reached the finals of the 2021 Australian Open, quarter-finals in France, and R4 in Wimbledon.

Alexander Zverev (3/1)

Alexander Zverev’s odds to win Australian Open 2022 have remained unchanged over the last few days and remain 3/1. That’s far above Rafael Nadal (10/1) but slightly below the top dogs.

Although it’s fair to say that Zverev will have a mountain to climb if he wishes to upset the field and win his first Grand Slam title, we wouldn’t count him out entirely. The German tennis star had a phenomenal run in 2021 when he made it to 2 semi-finals (France, U.S.), R4 in Wimbledon, and quarter-finals in Australia.

Besides that, Zverev also won the Olympic gold medal in Japan and claimed his second ATP Finals title in Turin, where he swept Medvedev in straight sets. So while he was less successful than Djoković and Medvedev, Zverev had very high scores.

Women’s Singles Favourites to Win

Ashleigh Barty (2/1)

The Wimbledon champion and the home crowd favourite, Ashleigh Barty, is priced as the main favourite to win her maiden home Grand Slam, which is more than fair. She hit the ground running in Adelaide last week when she picked up quite a few big scalps and showed that she is in prime form to launch an attack on the Grand Slam title.

One thing that could concern you is that Barty has yet to reach the final in Melbourne and has made it past the final 8 only once. So while Barty’s form is excellent, her course form is far from perfect.

Naomi Osaka (6/1)

The defending Australian Open champion, Naomi Osaka, is seeded only 13th this year, following her substantial drop down the rankings. And as if that wasn’t enough, her poor ranking saw Osaka land in the same section as the current favourite, Ash Barty.

It means that the top 2 women’s tennis players in the outright betting could clash in the 4th round, and fittingly, they’re tied at 2-2 in the head-to-head.

Compared to Barty, Osaka has a much better record in Melbourne. She has won 2 of the last 3 Australian Open tournaments and has repeatedly shown that Osaka is by far the best hard court player in the world when she’s in top form.

The problem is that Osaka is not at the top of her game. Since she won the 2021 Australian Open, Osaka has played only 17 matches and lost 6 while dealing with depression and anxiety, severely disrupting her 2021 season.

Garbine Muguruza (12/1)

WTA Finals winner Garbine Muguruza heads to 2022 Australian Open priced as high as 12/1 to win her first Grand Slam since the 2017 Wimbledon, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that she could do it. But outside of her WTA Finals title, the Spanish tennis star hasn’t achieved much last year.

Her most successful performance at the Australian Open came in 2020 when Muguruza made it to the finals. Still, she could only manage R4 last year when she lost against Osaka’s eventual champion. So it wouldn’t be surprising to see Muguruza win, but there are better betting options.
