Miami Open History & Court Specifics

For the better part of four decades, the Miami Open has been part of what’s called ‘the Sunshine Double.’ With twin Masters 1000 events occurring in late March and early April in the United States, Miami is the latter of the two.

A huge factor influencing the way you bet on the 2024 Miami Open tennis is the court conditions. Two big things to know about Miami: fast courts (hard and slick) and humid air. This means the balls will fly slowly through the air and fluff up, but they’ll bounce quickly off the court. Players with big serves and forehands will have an advantage, as well as those who have trained in hot, humid conditions before.

Unsurprisingly, Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite heading into Miami. The 20-year-old just won Indian Wells and is looking back to his very best. With a return of 3.05 (2/1), he leads defending finalist Jannik Sinner, who is on 3.45 (5/2). Next, defending champion Daniil Medvedev sits on 6.8 (6/1), well ahead of the chasing pack. Both Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur are the pick of the dark horses with odds of 14.7 (14/1) and 18.2 (17/1), respectively, but as you can see from these odds, they are well off the pace.

He did it on the weekend, and we say he’ll do it again in Miami. Why? It’s not just the fact that he’s got a recent title under his belt, though that helps. It’s because of what he’s been saying in Indian Wells. After lifting his first trophy since Wimbledon 2023, the world No 2 declared that he’s “found himself again” in California.

It’s no secret that Alcaraz has been slightly out of form for the past nine months. In the preceding 18 months, he won 11 titles. Until last week, he’d gone nine without a trophy. His explanation? He wasn’t smiling enough and stopped enjoying his tennis. Now that Alcaraz is back smiling and says he’s found himself, logic says that we can expect normal programming to continue, i.e. a myriad of titles for the Spaniard.

As an added bonus, Alcaraz has a very helpful draw in Miami. His biggest rivals – Sinner and Medvedev – are in the bottom half of the draw, while Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the event. This allows the Spaniard to virtually stroll his way into the final, where he’ll face a battered opponent.

This is a curly one, but we’re going for it. Andrey Rublev has been something of a controversial figure so far this season, with a big on-court incident blowing up on Twitter, including his response to it. The byproduct has been a string of sub-par results for the Russian, with early exits in events he’d usually be going deep at.

For one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour, we believe this form can’t last. With Jannik Sinner carrying an injury and Ugo Humbert having the better of Daniil Medvedev recently, there’s every chance that the Miami Open draw could fall in Rublev’s favor. Don’t be surprised if he bounces back strong from his controversial last few months and makes the final in Florida.

As expected, Iga Swiatek is well ahead in the betting odds from the Miami Open this week. The Pole returns 2.50 (3/2), more than half the odds of the next closest, Elena Rybakina, who pays 5.50 (9/2). Behind Rybakina is Aryna Sabalenka, who fell early in Indian Wells and returns 6.00 (5/1) in Miami. Coco Gauff is also in the mix at 9.00 (8/1) before the odds plummet to Jessica Pegula at an enormous 26.00 (25/1) for the fifth favorite.

Let’s be honest: Iga Swiatek is the heavy favorite to win in Miami. The Pole simply dismantled Maria Sakkari in the Indian Wells final, losing just four games. Just when it looked like the WTA Tour was tightening up and becoming more competitive, Swiatek has yet again asserted herself and begun to separate from the pack.

However, for very similar odds to an outright bet on Swiatek, you can wager on the entire first quarter. We say this is a great bet, considering the likes of Jasmine Paolini (recent Dubai champion), Emma Navarro (Indian Wells quarter-finalist and defeater of Sabalenka) and Jessica Pegula (home hero and fifth favorite) are all in the top quarter. If, for some reason, Swiatek falls, then one of these three still has a healthy chance of winning.

Coco Gauff to Win @ 9.00 (8/1)

Yes, this is a direct contradiction to the bet above, but no, we don’t care. You’d be delusional to think that both the ATP and WTA events are going to pan out exactly as predicted, so we suggest taking a stab at this high odds wager as well to cover yourself.

Coco Gauff has been somewhat off the boil this year, losing a match in the Indian Wells semi-finals that she should have won. However, she’s still there or thereabouts, and has shown in the past six months just how lethal she can be. Coming home to her usual training ground in Florida might be just what the 20-year-old needs to reignite her winning ways. Don’t underestimate how much her familiarity with the hot, humid conditions of Miami will help her if she gets tangled in some long three-setters.
