Two months before the start of the competition, Fide announced the withdrawal of Magnus Carlsen from the 2024 Candidates Tournament, as Nijat Abasov replaced the Norwegian grandmaster. The seven other participants in the tournament are as follows: Fabiano Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja, Hikaru Nakamura, D Gukesh, Vidit Gujrathi, and R Praggnanandhaa.
