Understanding the 2022 WTA Finals
The best in women’s tennis in 2022 will come together over the next ten days in Fort Worth, following a tradition that stretches back to 1972.
In terms of format, players are drawn into two groups, with a round robin occurring over the first five days in each group. The top two players from each group then qualify for the semifinals, where the first-placed woman in one group will play the second-placed player in the other. Semifinals are played as straight knockout matches, determining who will meet to compete in the final.
Prize money and points are awarded based on participation and wins, with players able to win as many as 1,500 ranking points and $1.68 million if they navigate the entire event unbeaten.
Here’s a look at the past winners in the singles event at the WTA Finals:
- 2016 — Dominika Cibulkova
- 2017 — Caroline Wozniacki
- 2018 — Elina Svitolina
- 2019 — Ashleigh Barty
- 2021 — Garbine Muguruza
Over in the doubles competition, here are the pairs that have won in recent years:
- 2016 — Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina
- 2017 — Tímea Babos and Andrea Hlaváčková
- 2018 — Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic
- 2019 — Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic
- 2021 — Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková
With this context in mind, let’s examine our expert picks for the WTA Finals 2022.
2022 WTA Finals Predictions
With the WTA Finals tennis 2022 odds released now, we can break down the favorites in each event based on past results and the form of the players heading into the 2022 WTA Finals. Looking at the eight women competing in the 2022 WTA Finals singles event, three players stand out as ones to watch:
Iga Swiatek to Win @ 2.25 (5/4)
According to reliable bookmakers, Poland’s Iga Swiatek has stood head and shoulders above the rest of the women on tour this season.
Not only did she go on an incredible winning streak to attain the world No.1 spot following the retirement of Ashleigh Barty, but Swiatek has consistently won titles, claiming eight singles titles in 2022, including two Grand Slams. The 21-year-old comes into the 2022 WTA Finals a hot favorite, fresh from winning the San Diego Open the week before last.
Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur to Win @ 7.00 (6/1)
Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur will provide healthy competition for Swiatek, however.
Jabeur has been Swiatek’s greatest rival this season, meeting the Pole twice in finals of WTA events. The Tunisian has collected two titles this year and sits at world No.2 behind Swiatek. Gauff, on the other hand, has yet to win a title this year but is playing with all the confidence of an 18-year-old with nothing to lose. Chances are Swiatek will round out 2022 with yet another win, but a cheeky bet on either Jabeur or Gauff to upset her wouldn’t go amiss either.
Looking at the women’s doubles events, chances are the winner will be one of these two pairs:
Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to Win @ 2.87 (15/8)
This 2022 WTA Finals is Krejcikova and Siniakova’s event to lose.
Not only are they the defending champions and the only doubles pair to have reached this stage of the year before, but they have also won three out of the four Grand Slams in 2022. Once the outright odds by American bookmakers are released on Sunday, expect these two to be huge favorites to win the title.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula to Win @ 4.33 (10/3)
Perhaps one pair that could upset these serial winners is the combination of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
The two won the San Diego Open together a fortnight ago and will also be active in the singles event. While this may cause fatigue, there’s a chance it will also see them hit the ground running and be match ready by the time their doubles matches roll around.
Expert Picks for WTA Finals 2022
With the 2022 season coming to an end, clear favorites exist in the singles and doubles events at the 2022 WTA Finals in Fort Worth next week.
- Iga Swiatek to Win @ 2.25 (5/4)
- Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur to Win @ 7.00 (6/1)
- Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to Win @ 2.87 (15/8)
We think it would be fitting if Iga Swiatek and the pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova walked away as champions, which is the most likely outcome. However, plenty of other women will have different ideas, and we’ll have to wait until November 7 to find out.
