Understanding the Dubai Open 2023

For more than three decades, tennis has been heading to Saudi Arabia in the first quarter of the year for the local Dubai Tennis Championship. This is played as both an ATP and WTA event, with the women’s event typically occurring a week prior to the men’s. The Dubai Duty Free Championship is alternately played as a WTA 500 and WTA 1000, with this year being the year that the event is allocated 1000 ranking points, making it one of the more significant tournaments in the women’s tennis calendar.

Here’s how the Dubai Open has unfolded over the past five years of play:

  • 2018 – Elina Svitolina defeated Daria Kasatkina
  • 2019 – Belinda Bencic defeated Petra Kvitova
  • 2020 – Simona Halep defeated Elena Rybakina
  • 2021 – Garbine Muguruza defeated Barbora Krejcikova
  • 2022 – Jelena Ostapenko defeated Veronika Kudermetova

It’s been five years since a player defended their title in Dubai, but Jelena Ostapenko will have an opportunity to do so next week. However, she’ll face tough competition, with a stacked draw featuring the best in women’s tennis all vying for the title. Can Ostapenko outlast her competitors, or will Swiatek continue her domination of women’s tennis over the past 12 months?

Women Dubai 2023 Tennis Predictions

Odds for this event are yet to be released. However, we can already see some excellent Dubai Open 2023 betting tips emerging. Keep an eye on the new betting sites in Saudi Arabia for their odds, but in the meantime, consider these 2023 WTA Dubai predictions:

Iga Swiatek to Win

It’s hard to go past a bet on Iga Swiatek to win in Dubai next week. The young Pole has been the hottest thing in women’s tennis the past 12 months, racing out to a 37-match winning streak to claim the number one spot this time last year after Ash Barty retired.

While she’s cooled slightly since then and failed to claim the first Grand Slam of the year, losing to Elena Rybakina in the Round of 16, she’s still a great bet here in Dubai. Currently, she’s playing in Doha this week and is looking excellent – her most recent match against the former World No.7 Danielle Collins barely lasted an hour, with Swiatek winning 6-0, 6-1. Having gained a walkover into the semifinals, whether or not the Pole wins in Doha is irrelevant – she’ll turn up in Dubai playing well and eager to win.

Iga Swiatek vs Aryna Sabalenka Final

Another player to keep an eye on in Dubai is Australian Open 2023 winner Aryna Sabalenka. Belarussian Sabalenka is the current World No.2 and was the best in the world earlier this year when she charged through the entire Australian Open draw to claim the title.

The 24-year-old has not played a tournament since Australia and will be returning to the courts well-rested and looking to maintain her momentum. Prior to Australia, she also won the Adelaide International 1, meaning that year to date, Sabalenka is unbeaten with an 11-0 record so far. Can she go all the way and make that 16-0 in Dubai? Regardless of whether she can, there’s a good chance she’ll meet Swiatek in the final, given that they will be placed on opposite sides of the draw.

Veronika Kudermetova to Win

This time last year, Veronika Kudermetova fell at the last hurdle in Dubai, losing in the final to Jelena Ostapenko. Twelve months later, she’ll be motivated to go one step further.

Kudermetova is the current World No.11 and has been building nicely in 2023 towards a big result. She’s due to contest a semifinal in Doha this week against Iga Swiatek, which will be a good indication of where she’s at, heading into Dubai. However, already this year, she’s made the quarterfinals of Adelaide 1, the semifinals of Adelaide 2, the quarterfinals of Abu Dhabi, and the semifinals of Doha.
