Understanding the 2023 World Snooker Championship

For well over a century, the World Snooker Championship has been the pinnacle of achievement and glory in the sport. First played in 1927, it is the longest-running and highest-paid event, with a total prize pool close to £2.5 million.

The tournament is played over the course of a fortnight and sees a 32-player bracket compete in a knockout format. A seeded format is used, with contestants battling in best-of-19 sets. Qualifying is taking place as the top 16 players head straight into the first round, while the remaining 16 must earn their place in a preliminary tournament.

Past Winners of the 2023 World Snooker Championship

  • 2018 – Mark Williams beat John Higgins
  • 2019 – Judd Trump beat John Higgins
  • 2020 – Ronnie O’Sullivan beat Kyren Wilson
  • 2021 – Mark Selby beat Shaun Murphy
  • 2022 – Ronnie O’Sullivan beat Judd Trump

With Ronnie O’Sullivan rekindling some form this time last year to win his seventh World Snooker Championship title in Sheffield, can the GOAT of snooker roll on and win an eighth? Or will one of this year’s in-form players lift the trophy? Read on for our 2023 World Snooker Championship predictions.

2023 World Snooker Championship Betting Guide

It’s the biggest event in the World Snooker Tour calendar, and we’ve prepared the biggest betting preview for you. Online snooker betting has never been more exciting, with plenty of high-value bets to be made over the next fortnight. Here are our top World Championship snooker predictions 2023:

Ronnie O’Sullivan to Win @ 5.00 (4/1)

Déjà vu? You bet. Yes, we’re picking Ronnie O’Sullivan to win. Yes, it’s cliché, but no, we’re not sorry. There’s a reason O’Sullivan is seen as one of the best snooker players of all time, if not THE best. The Englishman consistently steps up when there are big events to be played. O’Sullivan hasn’t won a title yet this calendar year, with his last victory coming in early November 2022. But guess what? It was a whopper – the Champion of Champions, where he beat Judd Trump for the trophy.

The bottom line is, Ronnie O’Sullivan still sits on top of the latest snooker rankings. The form is temporary, class is permanent, and it’s events such as the World Snooker Championship where class steps up. Expect O’Sullivan to be tuned in, focused on picking up an eighth title. It’s hard to see him not doing so as well, given his track record – he has, after all, won two of the last three.

Shaun Murphy to Win @ 10.00 (9/1)

While form might be temporary, Shaun Murphy certainly has plenty of it right now. The 40-year-old has rocketed his way up the snooker rankings to No.4 in the world, off the back of a hot streak in 2023. Since February, Murphy has made three of four finals in the events he’s played and won two of those. With the Players Championship and, most recently, the Tour Championship under his belt, the Englishman will be high on confidence.

Murphy has been playing some great snooker, too, beating the likes of Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, and Ali Carter en route to his two titles, and has also picked up wins over Neil Robertson and Judd Trump this season. In 2021, Murphy had similarly strong form and made a run all the way to the World Snooker Championship finals, where Mark Selby stopped him. Could Shaun Murphy go one step further this year? We say there’s a good chance if O’Sullivan doesn’t get in his way.

John Higgins to Win @ 19.00 (18/1)

Speaking of players who have made the World Snooker Championship final before, John Higgins knows what this tournament is all about. The Scotsman has won here on four previous occasions, in 1998, 2007, 2009, and 2011, while also making the final in 2001 and 2017-2019. Admittedly, Higgins is a little down on results this year, sitting at No.11 in the rankings and having suffered a few early exits this season. However, he has had some good Championship League results, defeating Judd Trump recently en route to his Winners’ Group victory.

For a man that has featured eight times in the final at Sheffield and collected four titles, odds of 19.00 (18/1) are very attractive. Sure, he may not be the No.1 candidate to win, but he’s always in with a strong chance, and a return of 19.00 (18/1) is worth a wager here for those after higher returns.
