The Women’s Super League is finally back with another exciting season for football fans, with Chelsea Women being the defending champions. The 2023–24 season will be the 32nd edition of the Women’s football championship in Engalnd. The competition runs from October 1st, 2023, to May 18th, 2024. It will be the fifth season with the 12-team league format.
The Football Association (FA) decided to start the Women’s Super League 2023/24 season on October 1, 2023, and end on May 18, 2024. The event is played all across England and consists of 12 teams competing for the title. Chelsea Women are the defending champions, having won their sixth championship last season, which was their fourth in a row. Each team plays a total of 22 matches throughout the season to determine the winner and the relegated club.

Chelsea Women are coming into this season as the double winners of the WSL and FA Cup. Manchester City Women have improved a lot in the last few years, as they have finished inside the top three in seven of the last eight seasons. Their two starting forwards, Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp, are two great offensive weapons for the team, and had a great year. The Citizens last won the Women’s Super League in 2016, but they are improving, and their chances will be there to win the title.
Manchester United Women were simply great last season, as they were in a two-horse race with the Blues for the title until the last day, but they lost the championship by two points at the end. The Red Devils have made some interesting signings in the summer to have another shot at the title, and they have good chances of improving even more this year and winning the championship.
Aston Villa Women improved a lot last season by finishing in fifth place, which is the first time they finished in the top half of the table since their promotion in 2020. Rachel Daly is the team’s superstar, and she has won the 2023 Barclays WSL Golden Boot with 22 goals, and she is one of the favorites to win it again this year. It will be really hard for Aston Villa to win the title this year, but if they keep improving, they might win it sooner rather than later.
The Women’s Super League is organized in a relegation/promotion style with the Women’s Championship, and it consists of 12 teams, each playing 22 matches throughout the season. The 2018–19 WSL season was the first with the 12-team format, and it has been working since then.

They have added Man United’s top goalscorer, Alessia Russo, who is expected to shine even more with Arsenal. The Gunners have also signed the Swedish defender Amanda Ilestedt, who was one of the best players in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Laia Codina, Cloé Lacasse, and Kyra Cooney-Cross are other great additions to the team.
The Gunners lost to PSG in a huge upset in the UCL qualifications and got knocked out, but that’s probably not the worst thing for the team, as they will focus a lot more on the WSL now.

Manchester City were one of the most consistent teams in the WSL last year. They were in third place most of the season, but with a loss to Arsenal at the end, they settled for fourth. The Citizens have a great squad with a lot of creativity; Chloe Kelly has created the most chances in the 2023 World Cup, while Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp were two of the best attackers. The addition of Yui Hasegawa has also been huge for the team so far. The odds of them winning are enticing and worth considering.

Manchester United finally broke into the top three after finishing in fourth place for three straight years. The Red Devils were title contenders until the last day of last season, and they were nine points ahead of third place.
The loss of the full-back, Ona Batlle, to Barcelona might be costly for the team, as she is one of the best, if not the best, in the world in that position. But they still have world-class players like Leah Galton and Maya Le Tissier, in addition to the signing of the Champions League winner from Barcelona, Geyse da Silva.
