Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane Betting Tips, Odds & Predictions (UFC 285, March 4)

UFC 285: Jones vs. Gane Betting Tips & Predictions

It doesn’t get any better than this. After three years out of the Octagon, Jon Jones, arguably the greatest UFC fighter of all time, will return to contest the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship. His opponent? The in-form, giant-killing Ciryl Gane. Not only is this the biggest fight of the year so far in the UFC, but it may well be the biggest match so far this decade.

UFC 285 Main Event: Key Details

After defeating Dominick Reyes in 2020, Jon Jones retired – until now. With the exit of Francis Ngannou from the UFC, the heavyweight belt is vacant, and the US betting star Jones is back to seal his legacy by stepping up a division to play with the big boys. France’s Ciryl Gane will have something to say about that, however, as we break down our Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane tips for this UFC 285 main event.

Event: UFC 285 Main Event, for Vacant Heavyweight Championship

Jon Jones Current Form in UFC

It’s been more than three years since Jon Jones was last in the ring. However, that’s not to say that Jones isn’t in good form. The American is on a 17-fight winning streak and holds the record for the most UFC title fight wins at 14. His record of 26-1-0 is comprised of 10 knockouts, six submissions, and 10 decision wins. Most recently, he’s won his last three fights by decision – some of which weren’t very convincing. We will see whether this was due to boredom or diminishing form on Saturday.

Jones’s Advantages Over Gane

Jones is an adept wrestler, with six submissions to his name. Last year, Ciryl Gane was taken down and dominated on the mat four times in his only career loss to Francis Ngannou. Jones is a much more robust wrestler than Ngannou, which bodes poorly for Gane if this fight ends up on the deck. Jones also brings a depth of experience, having been in 14 previous title fights, while Gane has only competed for a belt once before, resulting in a loss.

Ciryl Gane Current Form in UFC

After debuting at the UFC in 2019, Ciryl Gane initially tore through everyone in front of him. Seven quick wins over the likes of Alexander Volkov and Derrick Lewis saw Gane get a title fight in 2022 against Francis Ngannou. This was the only loss of Gane’s career, but he gave the reigning champion real trouble, knocking him down before losing a decision. Since then, he’s bounced back with a knockout win over Tai Tuivasa.

Gane Advantages Over Jones

Size and striking. Gane is a big man and is a heavyweight through and through. This will be Jon Jones’ first time-fighting at the highest weight grade, and Gane’s physicality could prove to be a shock for the man who is used to smaller opposition. Add to this the striking power of Gane, and the Frenchman could well win this if he’s able to compete on his own terms in this bout.

Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane Betting Tips

You’ve seen the background, and now it’s time for our Jones vs. Gane betting preview. For those who want to do some MMA betting online, here are the top three UFC 285 betting tips we recommend:

Fight to Go the Distance @ 1.80 (4/5)

This is our most conservative bet, which is reflected in relatively low odds of 1.80 (4/5). However, for good reason – four of Gane’s last seven fights have gone the distance, while the last three of Jones’ have all finished on points. As much as both these fighters have the tools to win by either knockout or submission, they also aren’t reckless.

Each fighter knows how to win. If that means controlling a fight, collecting points, and winning at the judges, then they have proven they’re perfectly comfortable with that. With a victory in this match carrying so much weight, this fight going the distance is the most likely result.

Jones to Win By Decision @ 2.87 (15/8)

If this does go the distance, it’s hard not to back the GOAT of MMA. Jones has won 14 previous title fights and has come back now after three years for a reason: he thinks he can win another title and add to his accolades. Jones wouldn’t return if he didn’t believe he was going to win, and this reality is reflected in the bookmaker’s odds as well.

Our Jones vs. Gane UFC 285 prediction is that similar to Gane’s only other loss, he’ll get controlled on the mat, and Jones will win by decision.

Gane to Win by Knockout @ 5.00 (4/1)

If Gane is to combat Jones’ strength on the mat, he’ll know it has to be done by power. This is the Frenchman’s primary advantage over Jones and something that he’ll undoubtedly look to leverage. Often power means a lack of speed, but we saw in Gane’s win over Tai Tuivasa that the 32-year-old has both. There’s a reason Gane has three knockouts in his last six fights.

It’s definitely a bold punt to go against a fighter like Jones, but at 5.00 (4/1), Gane could well knock out Jones and establish his own slice of UFC history on the weekend.
