History of the IHF World Women’s Handball Championship

This will be the 27th edition of the World Women’s Handball Championship, with the tournament first being held in 1957. Traditionally dominated by Eastern European nations, Russia and the Soviet Union have won the event seven times. Recent years, however, have seen Scandinavian countries come to the fore, with Norway claiming three of the past six titles. Here’s how the past five editions have unfolded:

Last Five Winners

  • 2013 – Brazil beat Serbia
  • 2015 – Norway beat the Netherlands
  • 2017 – France beat Norway
  • 2019 – Netherlands beat Spain
  • 2021 – Norway beat France

Norway winning the 2023 IHF World Women’s Handball Championship is the obvious bet to make ahead of the tournament commencing, and here’s why. Not only are they the top-ranked side in the world, defending champions, and four-time champions, but they have a strong track record of performing at home as well.

The last time Norway hosted this event, they defeated France in the final, winning their first-ever title in 1999 via double extra time. As the strong favorites to win again in 2023, perhaps the only thing that could trip up Norway is pressure and expectation – which they’ve proven they can navigate successfully.

Those wanting a slightly higher return on their bet may want to look at fellow host nation Denmark making a deep run here. The Danes have been steadily improving in 2023 after a disappointing Olympic campaign in 2021.

Since winning their first-ever title in 1997, Denmark have been regular fixtures in the semi-final stage of the IHF World Women’s Handball Championship. With five appearances in the past 12 editions, including in the 2021 tournament, all it takes is for Denmark to score an upset, and the home nation will have a shot at winning their second title.

Speaking of consistency, France have made the final of this tournament six times in the past 12 editions. The French simply love to make deep runs at the IHF Women’s Handball World Championships. Coming into this edition off the back of an impressive run at the 2021 Olympics, there’s no reason to believe they won’t be in the final yet again in 2023. With two finals in the past three tournaments, France are the most likely side to crack the Norway campaign this December.

Germany to Reach the Semi-Final @ 4.00 (3/1)

The bookies aren’t expecting German women to go too deep in this year’s tournament, but we say the nation with a proud handballing history will defy the handball odds for the 2023 Women’s WC and make it to the final four. They’ve had some patchy form so far this year, but with little expectation and plenty of history behind them, there’s no reason to believe Germany can’t cause a boilover here and keep a side like the Netherlands out of the semi-finals.

The biggest event in women’s handball of our BetZillion betting world is here, and in three weeks’ time, we’ll know who has bragging rights for the next two years. We say that team will be Norway, who will exact sweet, sweet revenge over France for their loss at the Olympics in 2021, claiming their fifth title along the way. Using the handball tips to back a home side, Denmark, to make a deep run or Germany causing an upset or two also makes sense.

Remember, you are not limited to any sport or event. We recommend also paying attention to football betting 5 pound deposit sites, for example. The range of wagering options is indeed limitless.
