There will be a total of £350,000 in the prize pool, with the champion team taking home £70,000, divided between the 2 players. But most importantly, the players will compete for the eternal glory of winning the world champion title.

As one of the most-watched darts sporting events, the PDC World Cup of Darts also presents many excellent gambling opportunities, some of which we will explore in our betting preview. So keep reading to see what our experts say about the event and their World Cup of Darts 2022 predictions!

Tournament History

The inaugural PDC World Cup of Darts was held in 2010, albeit the tournament was much different then. The first 3 iterations (2010, 2011, and 2012) featured 24 participating teams in the PDC Order of Merit, who met at the end of October, Following the World Grand Prix.

The tournament grouped each nation’s top player with the second-highest-rated player from the same country, with their average rating then used for seeding. The early format also saw the top 8 nations directly qualify for the second round, while the remaining 16 had to start the tournament in Round 1. All matches were best-of-11 (Bo1).

Things had changed since, most notably in 2013, when a new format was introduced, placing the 24 teams in groups of 3, each containing one of the top-8 ranked nations. Each team played one another in Bo9 doubles matches, with the top 2 teams advancing to the next stage.

In 2014, the field was extended to 32 teams, with the top-16 teams receiving the direct seed. The format has remained the same since, with the only significant change happening in 2016, when only the top-8 teams were seeded (rather than top-16).

2022 World Cup of Darts Odds – Bookies’ Favourites

Unfortunately, some of the sports’ biggest names, including Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen will miss the event. Still, even with their absence, the field heading to Germany is incredibly stacked. And yet, there are just a few teams that stand out from the rest as the main favourites, with the shortest 2022 World Cup of Darts betting odds.

Wales – 11/8

Team: Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton

The current World Cup of Darts 2022 odds show Wales as the pre-tournament favourites, which is far from surprising. Wales is only one of 2 teams at the tournament that makes up 2 of the current top-10 players in Gerwyn Price (no.2) and Jonny Clayton (no.8).

The duo lifted the trophy for Wales in 2020, and they’ve improved individually since. Most notably, Price won the World Championship last year, while Clayton was phenomenal in the Premier League, World Grand Prix and the Masters.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Price and Clayton both head to Germany in excellent form. Clayton has recently topped the Premier League standings but lost against Joe Cullen in the semis. Meanwhile, Price made semis of the US Darts Masters and QFs in the Nordic Masters.

Featuring 2 of the world’s best players, who have a strong synergy and past success, the duo are rightly priced as the favourites making Wales the most likely team to emerge as the PDC World Cup of Darts winner.

England – 9/2

Team: Michael Smith and James Wade

Even though England is priced as the second favourite to win the World Cup of Darts, this is not a team you would want to ignore. Michael Smith and James Wade are not only 2 of the world’s best players, and the duo are also 4-time champions – a joint record England holds with the Netherlands.

Admittedly, England does not look as dangerous as Wales on paper, but Smith and Wade will kick off the tournament in the third half of the draw so they can avoid Price-Clayton until the finals.

England should enter the tournament with Rob Cross, Joe Cullen, or Dave Chisnall. But the fact that we’re still getting an incredibly talented duo of Smith and Wade proves how much quality the nation has.

On that note, it was Wade/Smith who carried the English flag last year but saw their road to the summit spoiled by the unpredictable Austria duo in the semis. It raises some questions but also suggests that Smith and Wade will be more careful not to underestimate lower-ranked opponents.

The Netherlands – 5/1

Team: Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode

Due to the absence of Michael van Gerwen, the Netherlands is not nearly as dangerous as many expected the team to be. And it undoubtedly harms the Nerhlerlands’ chances to chase the record-5th title.

Although we consider Dirk van Duijvenbode a capable replacement and more than good enough to go toe-to-toe with anyone, he is not consistently playing at that level. Danny Noppert might still be riding high from his first Major title at the UK Open, but it was only his first Major, and he has a lot more to prove before we can start believing in him and his chances to upset the odds.

If you want to bet on the World Cup of Darts 2022 and fancy the Netherlands, we don’t see a problem with that. Both players are excellent in their own right, but considering how much talent is elsewhere, there is a good reason why all online UK bookies list the team as third favourites at 5/1.

The main reason is the absence of MVG, but rather than looking at what the Netherlands misses, we can focus on what it has. And that is two strong players who can go all the way if they bring their top game, granted they have some serious obstacles to overcome if they want to emerge as winners.

Wales to Win – 11/8

Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are the clear favourites to win the PDC World Cup of Darts for an excellent reason. Realistically, with the form they’ve been showing, this is their tournament to lose, and the only way they don’t win is if Price and Clayton underperform.

Some teams can cause problems but should be favoured for every match. Highly talented players with strong synergy – Clayton and Price are a straightforward choice for anyone who wants to bet on the World Cup of Darts 2022.

Belgium to Win – 10/1

Dimitri Van den Bergh and Kim Huybrechts entered the World Cup of Darts as dark horses, priced as high as 10/1 to win the trophy. Given how much better the top 3 teams look on paper, the offer seems fair, but we feel like 10/1 is a bit too generous.

Van den Bergh and Huybrechts boast a good balance of talent and experience and are more than capable of beating any team on a good day. In the current world no.9, Van den Bergh enters the tournament on the back of a W at the Nordic Masters, which is a good sign.

Huybrechts has not achieved anything spectacular of late, but he has 10 years of experience and is widely known as one of the most consistent performers on the circuit. As history has taught us, anything can happen, but realistically, the Belgium duo don’t need much luck to make a splash and possibly compete for the title.

Austria to Win – 40/1

Austria is an attractive alternative if you’re not a big fan of the Belgian duo making a splash at the tournament. Priced at very generous World Cup of Darts 2022 odds, Mensur Suljović and Rowby-John Rodriguez might not look as strong as the top contenders but are undeniably good enough to make a run for it.

Austria has made the final before, and we saw Singapore beat world no.1 Scotland a few years ago, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to see Suljović and Rodriguez succeed. The main question is whether Austria can win and bring home the nation’s first trophy.

It’s possible. Suljović and Rodriguez made the finals in 2021 in a field that was arguably just as strong as this year. Moreover, they defeated Belgium and England relatively quickly in 2021 and nearly upset Scotland in the final (4-1, 1-4, 3-4, 3-4). So an each-way bet on Austria at 40/1 is a great choice!

2022 World Cup of Darts Predictions – Bonus Pick

Australia has an intriguing partnership between Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock (world no. 20 and no.25), which should do well. Heta is a player who is extremely tough to stop when he finds his rhythm, while Whitlock has been one of the most consistent players in the PDC since he debuted in 2009.

If Australia gets it rolling early, we could see them make it far, and there are arguments in the favour to be made at 10/1.

Prediction: Australia to win – 10/1

Our World Cup of Darts 2022 Predictions

  2. Belgium to win – 10/1
