2022 Golf Canadian Open (PGA Tour, June 9-12) Betting Tips & Predictions

2022 Golf Canadian Open (PGA Tour) Betting Tips & Predictions

Find the best bets and a free betting preview for the 2022 Canadian Open with expert picks with top-rated golf odds courtesy of the premium golf bookmakers.

After a 2-year hiatus, the Canadian Open is finally back, ready to kick off on Thursday, June 9. It will mark the first time since 2010 that the tournament will travel to St. George’s Golf & Country Club, where the world’s top golf players will compete for the lion’s share of the $8.7 million prize pool and the glory that comes with winning one of the most prestigious tournaments on the PGA Tour.

It is a tournament no golf fan should miss, but at the same time also an event with excellent betting opportunities, which we will explore in this article. So, here is our free betting preview for the 2022 Canadian Open with our picks without further ado.

History of the Event

The Canadian Open heads to St. George’s for the 6th time in its history and the second time since 1968. But interestingly, St. George’s Golf and Country Club is just one of 2 golf venues that hosted the Canadian Open the most, behind Royal Montreal Golf Club (10) and Glen Abbey Golf Course (30).

It makes it difficult to pull any reliable data as it’s been a while since the last Canadian Open took place on this course. Still, the long hiatus has nothing to do with the quality of the course or the PGA Tour’s decision to skip but rather the logistics. St. George’s is located in the suburban outskirts of Toronto, making it difficult for the course to host a massive tournament – at least one of the Canadian Open’s scales.

Another issue we are facing when trying to predict which of the players has a chance to emerge as the winner is that the Canadian Open hasn’t been held for 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cancelled the event in 2020 and 2021.

But first, let’s consider which players hold the shortest odds to win the Canadian Open golf 2022.

Scottie Scheffler – 9/1

Scottie Scheffler leads the 2022 Canadian Open golf betting odds markets as the favourite, priced at 9/1, ahead of Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. That makes sense, despite his slip-ups this season.

After his first missed cut in 15 starts at the PGA Championship, Scheffler shifted into a higher gear and impressed at Colonia, nearly winning the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he lost in the playoffs. Still, his runner-up finish marked his 9th T7 or better of the season!

Unsurprisingly, the current no.1 in the world is expected to shine, and if his past scores are any indication, he just might. But that doesn’t necessarily make him an appealing pick at the offered gold Canadian Open 2022 odds.

Justin Thomas – 10/1

The PGA Champion, Justin Thomas, sits close behind Scheffler on the outright betting market, and that’s hardly shocking. He has been excellent this season, granted he hasn’t had much of an impact at Colonial, where Thomas missed the cut.

Nevertheless, he won the PGA Championship last month, was T5 at AT&T Byron Nelson, T8 at Masters, and T3 at Valspar Championship. Consistency isn’t Thomas’s strongest trait, but he is tough to beat when he is on.

It’s tough to say whether Thomas will show his strong side in Canada, but he is still one of the players you can’t ignore. He is outstanding on short courses, where strong SG: T2G players statistically do well. Thomas is one of the top-10 players in SG: T2G, Sam Burns, Corey Conners, Shane Lowry, CT Pan, Luke List, Adam Svensson, Cameron Smith, Nick Taylor, and Tony Finau.

It’s worth noting that Thomas ranks no.1 in short course history and opportunities gained. He also ranks top-5 in other vital stats such as P4: 450-500, SG: ARG, Comp Course History, Par-5 Scoring, and Sand Saves Gained.

Rory McIlroy – 10/1

The defending Canadian Open champion, Rory McIlroy, is priced as the tied-second favourite to win the upcoming event, which sounds about fair. He is the defending Canadian Open champion and the only of the last 5 winners with a realistic chance to win, but that doesn’t necessarily mean much since the 2022 Canadian Open will happen on a different golf course.

Still, what matters is McIlroy’s form and his stats. He dominantly won the Canadian Open in 2019, and he might look just as good this week. He is ranked top-10 in SG: APP, par-5, and par-4, four crucial stats for this tournament.

But besides his impressive stats, McIlroy has also looked good recently. He placed T18 at Memorial, 8th at PGA Championship, 5th at Wells Fargo, and second at the Masters, which translates to 2 top-5s and 3 top-8s across his last 4 starts.

Past Winners of the Tournament

  • 2019 – Rory McIlroy
  • 2018 – Dustin Johnson
  • 2017 – Jhonattan Vegas
  • 2016 – Jhonattan Vegas
  • 2015 – Jason Day

Time and Date of the Event

The 2022 Canadian Open is slated to kick off on Thursday, June 9 and conclude on Sunday, June 12. The event schedule will begin on Monday, June 6, with the RBC Canadian Open Final Qualifying and Golf Canada Foundation Celebrity Pro-Am, followed by practice rounds and Championship Pro-Am Draw Party on Tuesday, June 7. Finally, on Wednesday, June 8, the venue will host the Opening Ceremonies and the Championship Pro-Am.

So there will be plenty to look forward to in the days leading to the 2022 Canadian Open, but if you’re interested only in the main event, that’s fine. The tournament will be broadcast on all major sports TV channels and live streaming websites, and there’s a reasonably extensive live sportsbooks list that will stream the event.

While searching for live streams of the event on your favourite online golf bookie, also make sure to check if there are any free bet bonuses available, as promotions are relatively familiar with golf events of this magnitude.

Sam Burns to Win – 14/1

Sam Burns is not priced as a favourite, but he is easily one of the best value picks you can make and the leading man on our 2022 golf Canadian Open betting tips list.

The 2022 Canadian Open golf odds show Burns as a 14/1 outsider, which seems fairly generous considering he is one of the world’s best golf players and objectively one of the most talented. Moreover, he figured out how to be consistent with his showing this season, and he has always delivered in clutch moments.

Burns is coming off a victory at Colonial and has other impressive results from the previous rounds. That includes T20 at the PGA Championship, T1 at Valspar, T26 at The Players, and a T9 at Arnold Palmer.

He is also ranked 4th in birdie average, 7th in total strokes gained, and 12th in approaching the green. These figures, combined with his past results, make Burns hard to ignore as a potential winner of the Canadian Open.

Patrick Reed to Win – 45/1 (Each Way)

Patrick Reed is far too talented to be priced at 45/1 to win the 2022 Canadian Open. Although we aren’t trying to say that he should be leading the golf Canadian Open 2022 odds markets or be one of the top favourites, Reed deserves respect.

Reed hasn’t had the best season, but his game has started to come together, as seen in his past results. Reed has placed T35 or better in 5 of his last 8 tournaments, including a T7 at Colonial.

Moreover, Reed ranks top-20 in strokes gained across the last 12 rounds, including in SG: total, tee-to-green, around the green, short game, and approach. He might not be the best player heading to Toronto, but Reed can have a strong finish.

Brendon Todd to Win – 66/1 (Each Way)

We continue our golf Canadian Open predictions for 2022 with another longshot pick in Brendon Todd, priced at 66/1 to win the event. We wouldn’t take him as one of the outright picks, but an each-way bet is intriguing.

Todd is an outsider, but he hasn’t been too shabby. He was just one shot away from a playoff at Charles Schwab Challenge, was T26 at RBC Heritage, and was T8 at Texas Open. So even though he has yet to achieve anything remarkable, Todd has had a few flashes of greatness this season and has proven time and time again that he can compete for a solid finish in any field.

Canadian Open Golf 2022 Predictions – Bonus Pick

We end our Canadian Open golf 2022 predictions with a bet on Adam Hadwin. He is coming off a solid T18 at the Memorial, which marked his 5th finish of T26 or better across his last 7 events, including 3 T10s. His stats are not bad, seeing how he ranks 11th in strokes gained tee-to-green and 13th in SG: total, making him an attractive pick at the offered 2022 Canadian Open golf betting odds.

Prediction: Adam Hadwin to win – 44/1 (each way)

Our Golf Canadian Open Betting Tips for 2022

  1. Patrick Reed to win – 45/1 (each way)
  2. Brendon Todd to win – 66/1 (each way)
  3. Adam Hadwin to win – 44/1 (each way)
  4. Sam Burns to win – 14/1

With that, we conclude our free 2022 Canadian Open golf betting preview, providing 4 expert picks and value bets for you to check out. Before placing your bets, pick the best golf bookmaker and bet with the best available odds!
