Understanding the Women’s Ashes 2023

The Women’s Ashes is hands down the most historical, competitive series in women’s cricket. With the first series being played in 1934-35, the Women’s Ashes has occurred 23 times so far, with Australia winning nine times and England six times. Up until 2013, the series mirrored the men’s Ashes, with only Test matches being played. However, recent years have seen both ODIs and T20Is included as well, with a points system applied in order to determine the series winner (four points to grab in a Test and two in a limited-over format).

Here’s a look at how the past five Women’s Ashes have unfolded:

  • 2013-14 — England won (10-8)
  • 2015 — Australia won (10-6)
  • 2017-18 — Series drawn (8-8)
  • 2019 — Australia won (12-4)
  • 2021-22 — Australia won (12-4)

With England not having won the Ashes for a decade now, Heather Knight and her girls will be desperate to snap that losing streak and claim the urn back for their nation. The big question is: can they stop Australia, who have looked nigh on unbeatable in recent years? We turn to the betting odds for England vs Australia 2023 female cricket to answer this question.

They dominated the cricket WC odds, and they’re dominating the England Women vs Australia Women cricket odds too. All of this is for good reason, as Australia are arguably one of the best teams in women’s cricket ever. Of the last 20 global events that this side has competed in, they’ve come out on top more often than not – 13 times, to be precise.

It’s this kind of dominance that we see Australia bringing to England. The Aussies come to the UK off the back of winning the Women’s T20 World Cup in Cape Town just a few months ago and look in imperious form. Backing them to win here isn’t that much of a stretch, considering they’ve also claimed three of the past four Ashes too.

Prior to the 1st Test kicking off in the Women’s Ashes, the Australia Women played a warmup match against the England-A team. While the match was drawn, one batter stood out in particular as adapting well to the English conditions – Beth Mooney. The opener stood tall and plundered 107 in her first innings while teammates fell around her. In the second, she slipped down the order to give others an opportunity yet still struck a handy 35 not out when called upon.

While the 29-year-old does not have much Test experience under her belt, we say she’ll kick on here and be a real problem for the English, scoring some big runs in the first innings of the 1st Test.

This one is a real risk. Kim Garth is yet to play a Test for the Australia Women and is with the squad as an allrounder in the shorter form of the game. However, Garth was impressive in the warmup match earlier this week, taking four wickets for only 69 runs off 19 overs. She was economical and a genuine wicket-taker in English conditions.

Those willing to take a punt that Australia will do some juggling and squeeze her into the starting 11 would be looking at a healthy 8.00 (7/1) payout if she continues performing at her best.
