The Open Championship 2022 is just around the corner, and BetZillion is back with free British Open Championship betting tips and predictions, with top odds and the best golf bet offers. In this betting preview, we will look closely at who the 2022 Open Championship wagering odds show as the favourites and which players you should bet on.

So without further ado, here is our in-depth preview of the Open Championship predictions 2022. But first, some history of the event.

History of the Event

The Open Championship (the Open or British Open) is the oldest golf tournament in the world and is widely considered one of the most prestigious golf events. Founded in 1860, the tournament was initially held at Prestwick Golf Club before moving to various golf courses in the UK.

It is one of the 4 men’s major golf tournaments alongside the PGA Championship, the Masters and the US Open. It is chronologically the 4th and final major event of the year, historically held in June-July.

Interestingly, the Open Championship got its name because it is open to professional and amateur players. However, in practice, it’s a professional event which welcomes only a handful of amateurs who earn their spot at the event via qualification or invitation.

Since the Open Championship was first held, it has been hosted in Northern Ireland (2), England (51) and Scotland (96). The Old Course at St Andrews, where the 2022 iteration of the tournament will take place, has hosted 29 events – the most in history, behind Prestwick Golf Club (24) and Muirfield (16).

The Open Championship 2022 Odds – Bookies’ Favourites

The Open Championship 2022 odds are out, and according to the offer provided by live sportsbooks, Rory McIlroy is the current top favourite to win the championship. That sounds fair since he is one of the most talented players on the field, but there are other players we wouldn’t look past.

Rory McIlroy – 10/1

Any bookmaker you visit will have the 2014 Open champion, Rory McIlroy, as the current favourite to win the 2022 Open Championship, which sounds about right. He is in excellent form and is familiar with the course, where he has achieved plenty of success in recent years.

Even recently, Rory McIlroy has been playing solid golf. He placed T19 at the Travellers Championship, T5 at the US Open, was T4 at the Canadian Open and finished 8th in the PGA Championship. Although not the most outstanding results, Rory McIlroy adores this course due to his past achievements and mainly because the layout suits his style. But does that make him someone we should add to our British Open Championship 2022 predictions list? Not at the offered odds.

Jordan Spieth – 18/1

Betting on 10/1 on the outrights holds little appeal, but Jordan Spieth could be interesting, mainly because he seems a bit underrated. An outstanding player who nearly won the grand slam in 2015 is back on the course, which has been kind to him in the past.

He won the Open Championship as world no 3 in 2017 when he was priced at 16/1, but even at the offered odds, we wouldn’t bet on Jordan Spieth or any other player with his price. The field is just too stacked, and the course is known to produce upset winners, so most of the players with short 2022 Open Championship odds don’t appeal to us.

Xander Schauffele – 18/1

Xander Schauffele enters the Open Championship red hot, but it would be surprising if he can make it four in a row. He won the Travellers and the Scottish Open, boasts a solid Open record and is in great form. All combined makes him an exciting pick even at 18/1, a price we wouldn’t be ready to pay for a wager on Spieth.

However, we disagree with any bookmaker who priced Schauffele above Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas. It doesn’t sound right, and it isn’t. He’s a good player, but if the price isn’t right, he won’t find himself on our British Open Championship betting tips.

Past Winners of the Tournament (Last 5)

  • 2021 – Collin Morikawa
  • 2020 – not held
  • 2019 – Shane Lowry
  • 2018 – Francesco Molinari
  • 2017 – Jordan Spieth

Time and Date of the Event

The 2022 Open Championship is slated for July 14-17 at Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. It will be the 4th and final major event and one of the most heavily-anticipated golf tournaments of the year.

Given its importance, you can rest assured that there will be a 2022 Open Championship broadcast on all major sporting TV channels, and you won’t struggle to find a live stream of the tournament on online live streaming platforms. Moreover, keep an eye out on sports welcome bonuses, and the other UK betting offers for the tournament, which should be available with major British Open bookmakers.

Cameron Smith to Win – 22/1

In our book, Cameron Smith is the best bet you can take at the offered odds to win the British Open Championship. In the lead-up to the tournament, there’s been a lot of talk about what Smith can do at St Andrew’s, but also some questions about his discipline. Still, he is efficient with a wedge, which should outweigh the fact that he lacks 15 yards of the tee.

There may be no better short-game players than Smith. We saw him in action when he won the Players despite spraying the ball everywhere. Had he put it a bit better, it would have been an even more convincing victory. Admittedly, Smith has missed a few big chances this year, but he has shown highs and is a solid bet at the current British Open Championship 2022 odds.

Dustin Johnson to Win – 35/1

We continue our The Open Championship predictions 2022 with a bet on Dustin Johnson. The 38-year-old is suspended from the PGA Tour, which indicates that he is happy with what he has. And if we were to give him the benefit of the doubt, then there is no better place to do so than at St Andrew’s.

Johnson has a spectacular record here and is a superb player. The only thing that might concern you is his potential lack of sharpness. Still, he didn’t disappoint at the US Open, where he placed 24th, which was a solid result. He drove the ball well and had good approaches, resulting in a solid strokes-gained figure. Johnson might not seem the most likely winner, but he has shown enough on the course for us to take a swing with him at 35/1.

Tony Finau to Win – 45/1

Tony Finau did not show up at the US Open last month, but he has been excellent throughout the season. He has been one of the most consistent players since finishing second in Mexico.

Since then, he has added 2 top-5s, including a runner-up finish in Canada and even though he could only manage T13 in the Travellers, it was still a relatively solid showing. We must also keep in mind that Finau is one of the top players off the tee, his approaches, and is one of the best ball-strikers on the Tour.

The eye test can prove that, but there are also figures to check – Finau is on his way towards his 6th season of positive short-game numbers. Many overlook this game area, but it will be highly beneficial this week. At 45/1, Finau is an excellent pick.

2022 The Open Championship Betting Tips – Bonus Pick

For our final prediction, we have to take Hideki Matsuyama, priced very generously on the 2022 Open Championship betting odds markets. He was phenomenal at Augusta and has since won a couple more titles to prove how good he can be. Combine that with 6th at Muirfield in 2013 and a solid performance at Birkdale, and you have a player that could follow the footsteps of Woods, Johnson, and Nicklaus and score the double.

Prediction: Hideki Matsuyama to win – 45/1

Our British Open Championship 2022 Predictions

  1. Cameron Smith to win – 22/1
  2. Dustin Johnson to win – 35/1
  3. Tony Finau to win – 45/1
  4. Hideki Matsuyama to win – 45/1

That concludes our free The Open Championship betting preview, providing excellent Open 2022 predictions for you to follow. Before you place your bets, use only reputable bookmakers and ensure that you’re betting with the best odds to win the British Open Championship 2022.
