2024-25 SVNS Season Standings

With five events already in the books this season, here’s a look at how the points table looks before we head to Singapore this weekend:

Current Standings Team Events Played Points
1 Argentina 5 88
2 Fiji 5 76
3 Spain 5 74
4 South Africa 5 66
5 France 5 64

There are a few surprising names doing well this season on the Sevens circuit, with Spain currently sitting third in the overall rankings. They are yet to win an event but have been consistent performers, making the semi-finals on three occasions.

Notably, both New Zealand and Australia are outside the top five. Argentina, meanwhile, has been brilliant, with three event wins in a row now after a slow start to the season.

Argentina 7s @ 2.60 (8/5)

Argentina are the clear favorites across bookmakers in Singapore heading into this tournament, given they’ve now won three in a row. But with the top spot all but locked up, how motivated will they be coming into this weekend?

Fiji 7s @ 4.50 (7/2)

Fiji are second favorite and also sit second in the SVNS standings overall this season. They have a slim chance of surpassing Argentina at the top, but more importantly, they need some good points here to stay inside a congested top four on the ladder.

France 7s @ 7.50 (13/2)

France were impressive in Hong Kong and jumped to third-equal favorites in Singapore off the back of their runner-up finish. At the same time, they are one of the most unstable top teams, which likes to interchange positive and negative results.

New Zealand 7s @ 7.50 (13/2)

The Kiwis have had an incredibly underwhelming season, failing to place over the first five events. Count them out at your peril though–they’ve won this event the last two years.

Australia 7s @ 8.00 (7/1)

Rounding out the top five favorites, Australia are priced at 8.00 (7/1), having come third in Hong Kong’s last tournament. Moreover, they are priced lower to win Pool C involving Spain, which is underperforming this season.

It may sound crazy, but we fully expect New Zealand to go from zero to hero in this event. They haven’t done anything at all so far this season, with a solitary fourth-place finish in Dubai their best performance.

However, two things give us confidence they’ll turn that around. First, Singapore is where New Zealand thrive. There’s something about the city that Kiwis love, and their track record shows it. This is exactly what the two-time defending champions need.

Second, the All Blacks Sevens will know that under the new format, they are definitely not out of the running for the title this year despite sitting seventh in the standings. Their spot in Los Angeles is assured; all they need to do is string a few wins together, and the trophy is theirs.

What better way to start than by getting some momentum in Singapore? There’s a reason rugby 7s betting sites have them third favorite, despite their shocking form.

Australia to Win Pool C @ 1.5 (1/2)

Funnily enough, we expect Australia to perform well this weekend as well. The Aussies are also having a weak season, sitting sixth overall. However, they are a proud rugby nation and showed some signs of life in Hong Kong with a third-place finish. Back them to be focused on a run into the grand final and top their pool here as a result.

Spain (-14.5) Handicap vs Uruguay @ 1.9 (10/11)

We expect Australia to top Pool C for very different reasons, but the odds for this outcome are too shy to stop on them. At the same time, there are no doubts that Spain and Australia will fight for the top place, leaving Uruguay at the underdog spot. To receive a pole position in the battle for first place, Spain should demolish Uruguay, just as they did in Vancouver (38-12). The Spanish side didn’t lose their momentum and seats third in the overall standing with eyes put on the second spot, so they should be motivated enough to start the event strong.
