Understanding the 2025 Welsh Open

The Welsh Open has been a mainstay in the snooker calendar since 1992, making it one of the longest-running competitions in the sport. The upcoming edition will be the 34th staging of the tournament.

Players seeded 65–96 meet those seeded 97–128 in qualifying round one. The 32 round-one winners play those seeded 33–64 in qualifying round two. The top 32 seeds in the first round of the main stage are then played by the 32 round two winners.

Until the quarter-finals, which are the best of nine, all matches are played as the best of seven frames. The final is a best of 17 frame match run over two sessions; the semi-finals are the best of 11.

Past Welsh Open Winners

  • 2024 – Gary Wilson beat Martin O’Donnell
  • 2023 – Robert Milkins beat Shaun Murphy
  • 2022 – Joe Perry beat Judd Trump
  • 2021 – Jordan Brown beat Ronnie O’Sullivan
  • 2020 – Shaun Murphy beat Kyren Wilson

John Higgins is the most successful player in Welsh Open history with five titles. Ronnie O’Sullivan comes second with a quadruple. Gary Wilson took the trophy home last year after beating fellow Englishman Martin O’Donnell in the final.

Ronnie O’Sullivan @ 6.00 (5/1)

O’Sullivan did not feature in the Masters last month and has been searching for his best form lately, but 2025 snooker bookies think he deserves to have the shortest 2025 Welsh Open snooker odds.

Kyren Wilson @ 7.00 (6/1)

Current world champion Kyren Wilson will feature strongly in 2025 snooker Welsh Open predictions, thanks to the favorable odds bookies have assigned to him.

Mark Selby @ 7.00 (6/1)

Mark Selby will look to bounce back after his premature German Open exit. Welsh Open 2025 snooker predictions suggest he will be one of the biggest contenders for the title in Llandudno.

Neil Robertson @ 7.50 (13/2)

Welsh sportsbooks also consider Neil Robertson an excellent option to bet on the Welsh Open snooker 2025.

Shaun Murphy @ 9.00 (8/1)

Shaun Murphy is a man in form as he enters the fray as The Masters champion. The former Triple Crown champion, therefore, will also be a common name across 2025 snooker Welsh Open predictions.

Wilson confirmed his reputation as the Crucible king and responded strongly to his Master’s heartbreak. Two weeks after failing against Shaun Murphy at Alexandra Palace, the world number two surged to triumph in the German Masters and added a second Brandon Parker Trophy to his name.

Just three days after taking Berlin, “The Warrior” fought his way to the Championship League Invitational final. Now, at Venue Cymru, Wilson leads for glory as Judd Trump is sidelined. Already this season, he has made a statement by defeating the four-time champion in the final to capture the Northern Ireland Open. So, we will begin our 2025 snooker Welsh Open predictions by forecasting a successful title charge for Wilson.

Mark Williams to Win Third Quarter @ 4.33 (10/3)

Since Mark Williams came runner-up in 2003, remarkably none of the local players has made it to the Welsh Open final—let alone won it. The best chance to stop that run is the three-time world champion once again. Should Williams manage to win it, it will be a fitting homage to Welsh snooker legends Ray Reardon and Terry Griffiths, who passed away last year.

We will not make such an audacious prediction for the Welsh Wonder, however. That said, we do believe he has the ability to finish ahead of the rest in the second quarter. O’Sullivan is the man to beat in this market, but given his recent inconsistencies, we would say Williams seems like a safer bet with more lucrative returns.

Wilson seems to have the momentum to become the Welsh Open champion for the second time in his career. We also feel confident in backing Williams to top the pile in the third quarter.
