The battle for survival in top-flight football is almost as interesting as the title race, and it comes with even more drama as most teams dread dropping to the second division. Luton Town gained promotion to the Premier League alongside Burnley and Sheffield United. Can the newcomers keep their spots? The English Premier League is the most entertaining of Europe’s top five leagues, and last season we saw Leicester City relegated in an unusual fashion. At the same time, Everton escaped by the thinnest margins, sending packing Leeds United and Southampton.
The 2023/24 English Premier League season kicks off on the 11th of August and ends on the 19th of May next year, with all games taking place across England. The bottom three teams are automatically relegated, as there are no playoff rules.

At the end of the English Premier League season, the bottom three teams (18th, 19th, and 20th position) are automatically relegated to the English Championship. The tiebreaker order criteria are based on points, overall goal difference, overall goals scored, and then head-to-head record. The top two teams from the English Championship 23/24 season and the winner of the playoffs will replace the relegated teams.
Luton Town beat the odds in a special season to book their place in the English Premier League, but the bookies in England aren’t sold on them yet. Below are the odds for relegation in the 2023/24 English Premier League season:
The Hatters had a great underdog story last season in the English Championship last season as they racked up 80 points to reach the playoffs. Luton Town was playing in the National League a decade ago, and they have powered their way to the pinnacle of England football. Rob Edwards was vital to their return to the English Premier League but still has a lot to prove, as the bookmakers have them as top contenders to relegate this season.
Sheffield United returned to the English Premier League after a two-year absence, and they would be hoping for a longer stay this time around. Paul Heckingbottom guided his team to a second-place finish in the English Championship last season, gaining automatic promotion. The Blades have made some adjustments to the team, with Benie Traore replacing Iliman Ndiaye, but they still need some signings to compete properly.
AFC Bournemouth was one of the Premier League teams that benefited from the second half of the campaign last season. They were on the verge of relegation to the second division, but five wins in seven games last April turned their fortunes around. The Cherries couldn’t keep up, and they lost their last four Premier League games as they finished two places above the drop zone. AFC Bournemouth has been very active with offensive signings in the summer window.
After their relegation in the 2021/22 season, it didn’t take long for Burnley to return to the English Premier League, and they did that in grand style, smashing the 100-point mark. Vincent Kompany has built an admirable footballing culture at Burnley, and they have gone from being a very defensive team to a possession-based side that entertains with a lot of goals. Burnley has had a very good preseason, and they have made some good additions to the team; still, it remains to see if they can maintain their style in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest had one of the craziest transfer windows last season, where they signed over 15 players in one window, and it paid off eventually as they retained their top-flight status. The Garibaldis have done a lot of clear out this summer, but there have been very few signings, and they could risk starting the season with a weak squad. Nottingham Forest has not been great in the preseason tour, and Steve Cooper’s work might be much harder than expected.

Sheffield United doesn’t have a core as good as the team they had in their last Premier League campaign. The Blades are deficient in attack, and this was very evident in their friendly games this season as they drew blanks against very weak teams. Sheffield United still has some time to strengthen the team, but they are definitely going to struggle in the Premier League this season. Among the newly promoted teams, Sheffield United had the most losses in the English Championship last season.

Nottingham Forest spent more time in the relegation zone than outside the drop last season, and they are very lucky to spend another season in the top flight. Last season, only five Premier League teams failed to hit double digits for wins in the competition, and Nottingham Forest was one of them.
