Understanding the Darts World Grand Prix

The PDC World Grand Prix has been a mainstay in the PDC calendar since 1988, making it one of the oldest darts competitions that are still active. It’s a battleground where only the most tenacious players dare to tread. Only three players have managed to win the tournament more than once, so making darts predictions for the 2024 World GP will be no walk in the park.

Other than his occasional Senior Darts Championship appearances, the legendary Phil Taylor, who has won the tournament a whopping 11 times, has been out of the competitive scene since 2018. That means six-time champion Michael van Gerwen and two-time champion James Wade are the only players in the current field who have tasted PDC World GP glory multiple times.

To make better use of our darts tips for the 2024 World GP, you must understand the format of the tournament. Since its inception, the tournament has not stayed loyal to a certain format. The inaugural event in 1998 was a straight knockout affair, a quick-fire battle of three-legged sets. But in 1999, the tournament took a twist, introducing a group stage where players clashed in longer, five-legged sets.

The year 2000 saw the World Grand Prix return to its knockout roots, with 24 players vying for glory. A select group of eight seeds, the tournament’s elite, enjoyed a first-round bye. But the following year, the competition heated up with 32 players, including the seeds, clashing in the opening round.

According to the latest rules, World Grand Prix matches will advance from best-of-three sets in the first round to a best-of-11 set final. The second round, quarterfinals, and semifinals will be played as best-of-five and best-of-nine sets, respectively.

Just like the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix has a tough qualifying process. Only the top 32 players, based on their rankings on the PDC Order of Merit and ProTour Order of Merit, make it into the tournament each year.

Past Winners of the Darts World GP

    • 2019 – Michael van Gerwen beat Dave Chisnall
    • 2020 – Gerwyn Price beat Dirk van Duijvenbode
    • 2021 – Jonny Clayton beat Gerwyn Price
    • 2022 – Michael van Gerwen beat Nathan Aspinall
    • 2023 – Luke Humphries beat Gerwyn Price

Luke Humphries will look to become the first PDC World Grand Prix champion in six years to defend his title in Leicester this year. Michael van Gerwen was the last to do so. The Dutchman has won the tournament twice in the last five years and will be one of the favorites to lift the trophy once again.

    Luke Littler @ 3.75 (11/4)

Luke Littler is the darts 2024 World Grand Prix odds favorite to clinch the World GP for the first time in his career, but the teenage sensation looked nowhere near his best at his latest outing. Littler will be looking to bounce back from his disappointing Swiss Darts Trophy third-round loss in Basel to Humphries and rediscover the form he had shown earlier this year.

    Luke Humphries @ 4.00 (3/1)

Legal darts bookies in UK consider Luke Humphries as the second favorite in Leicester. He enjoyed a revitalizing win over fellow favorite Littler in the Swiss Darts Trophy but could not overcome the resilient Joshua Rock in the quarter-finals. How will that outcome affect his title defense? The early World Darts GP 2024 predictions are still in favor of ‘Cool Hand Luke.’

    Michael van Gerwen @ 5.50 (9/2)

We have already mentioned how successful Michael van Gerwen has been in this tournament, but the harsh truth is he is still chasing his first major title of the year. A recent win at the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy, however, has made ‘Mighty Mike’ fans hopeful of a resurgence.

    Gerwyn Price @ 9.00 (8/1)

Gerwyn Price has reached the World Grand Prix final three times in the past four years but has only managed to lift the trophy once. The Welshman, therefore, will be determined to join the exclusive club of players with multiple World Grand Prix titles. Despite having an underwhelming tour so far, Price’s excellent record in the competition makes him one of the favorites.

    Michael Smith @ 11.00 (10/1)

Michael Smith’s record at the World Grand Prix has been unimpressive, aside from his semi-final run last year. Although he won the World Cup with England alongside Humphries this year, he has struggled with consistency lately. That said, writing him off would still be a risky decision.

We backed Michael van Gerwen to win the Swiss Darts Trophy, but we did not get to see the Dutchman in action as he chose to withdraw from the competition. He will be back in Leicester, and we are confident he will be able to take the trophy home once again.

Van Gerwen has not had a major trophy-less year in more than a decade. Although his performance has been lackluster by his own stellar standards, he seems to be finding his rhythm again lately. Therefore, MVG remains our top pick to become the 2024 World Grand Prix champion.

High Odds Pick: Gian van Veen @ 67.00 (66/1)

Gian van Veen could only make it to the second round of the Swiss Darts Trophy after his phenomenal Hungarian Darts Trophy run. Van Veen has been one of the most promising names in the circuit since last year. He recorded some big wins in Hungary, so if you feel the urge to back an underdog, GVV is our recommendation this week.

Van Gerwen left us disheartened with a late withdrawal last week, but we expect to see the Dutch darts legend at his best in Leicester. The World Grand Prix is a tournament he has enjoyed playing in the past. His recent uptick in performances has given us further encouragement to root for another MVG win.
