Looking at the latest darts betting odds, the in-form Luke Humphries has his nose ahead of dart’s two biggest names, Michael van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price. Humphries sits at 4.00 (3/1), while van Gerwen is just behind at 4.50 (7/2) before Price comes in at 5.50 (9/2). These three are miles ahead of the rest of the field, with Michael Smith more than double the odds of Price at 12.00 (11/1) before Rob Cross and Gary Anderson round out the top favorites at 15.00 (14/1). Understanding the Darts World Championship 2024

This will be the 31st edition of the World Darts Championship, with the event running since 1994. In what is arguably the hardest and most prestigious tournament to win, courtesy of its length (three weeks) and tough draw (96 players), the reward at the end of it all is worthwhile (£500,000 to the winner).

Here’s how this tournament has unfolded in recent years:

Oh, he was right there in the Players Championship final. Michael van Gerwen went down to Luke Humphries 11-9 in the final, as we predicted, and it will have stung the all-time great. Humphries may be the talk of the town, but with the Players Championship final showing us the margins are razor thin between the pair even when Humphries is in form, we say the format of this event will benefit the Dutchman.

There’s a reason van Gerwen has won more World Darts Championship titles than any other active player. It’s because, over such a long, grueling event, quality rises to the top. His track record here, combined with the added motivation of making up for recent defeats, will spur van Gerwen along, and we expect to see a victory here for The Ogre in London.

Someone else who has a strong track record at the World Darts Championships is Michael Smith. The Englishman went all the way this time last year, taking down Michael van Gerwen in the final in impressive fashion, coming back from 2-3 down to win 7-4. He’s also made the final on two separate occasions, in 2022 and 2019, indicating just how well this event gels with him.

Since making the semi-finals of the PDC World Grand Prix of Darts in October, Smith’s form has been down. However, we say instead of this being a red flag, it’s an opportunity. When else can you get 12.00 (11/1) odds for the defending champion – particularly one of Smith’s caliber – to retain their title? In previous years, Smith has come into this event in low form as well, and has performed, so we say this is an excellent high-odds bet to take.

With all the focus on Humphries and van Gerwen, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Peter Wright is in brilliant form and heads to London as a real title threat. The Scotsman has won two of the past four World Darts Championships and is the only player to win a significant title in the last two months who isn’t named Luke Humphries.

We think this is a compelling enough reason to get a bet on Wright making a deep run to the final, even if he doesn’t quite manage to go all the way. The draw has fallen in his favor as well, with both Humphries and van Gerwen in the other half to Wright.

Nathan Aspinall to Win Fourth Quarter @ 7.00 (6/1)

All signs are pointing towards Luke Humphries winning the World Darts Championships. But, we feel an upset in our bones and say it will come at the hands of Nathan Aspinall. What evidence do we have? Very little – except for a feeling that Humphries surely can’t keep winning everything, and Aspinall likes to rear his head every few months and cause a big upset.

Aspinall has come runner up three times this year, at the German Darts Grand Prix, the New Zealand Darts Masters, and the Darts Grand Prix, plus won the World Matchplay. It’s been a minute, though, with the Englishman doing very little results-wise since September. Is now the time? The sharp betting and odds of 7.00 (6/1) show NO, but the potential return says YES, and is worth a pro bettors punt here.

The 31st edition of the World Darts Championship sees a confluence of exciting narratives in London. Can Luke Humphries continue his hot form? Will Michael van Gerwen win his fourth? Can Michael Smith defend his title? We say it will be an event full of twists and turns, that ultimately ends in The Ogre coming out on top come January 2024.
