Understanding The Olympic Games Water Polo Tournament

The Water Polo games feature in the Olympics every four years with male and female categories, each team containing 13 players from the nations qualified. The men’s category has two groups with six teams in each group and the top four automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, with eight teams eligible to participate in the first round of the knockouts. There are 10 teams in total for the women’s category, grouped into two pots of five. Like the men’s category, the first four teams after the preliminary round will progress to the next stage.

Summer Olympics Water Polo History

The Water Polo games debuted in the Olympics in 1896 but there was just a male category for the first 23 editions at the Olympics. Women’s water polo made its debut in the Summer Olympics in 2000, with the United States Women claiming gold in Australia. Hungary’s men’s national water polo team is the most successful for the male category, participating in 22 of 27 Olympic tournaments and winning fifteen Olympic medals (nine gold, three silver, and three bronze). From 2012 to 2021, the United States women’s team won three consecutive gold medals at the Summer Olympics, and they are the most dominant female team.
