Max Verstappen – Evens

It’s not a surprise to see Max Verstappen as the main betting favourite to win the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. Even though he sits in second on the 2022 F1 standings, Verstappen travels to Barcelona GP on the back of 2 consecutive wins in Italy and Miami.

With that, Verstappen continued the trend of either winning or not finishing a race. He has crashed out of the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Australian Grand Prix but won the remaining 3 races, seemingly without issues.

Just 19 points behind Charles Leclerc, Verstappen is the early favourite to win in Spain as he looks to make it 3 in a row and get one step closer to defending his Formula One crown.

Charles Leclerc – 5/4

Charles Leclerc looked solid in Miami, where he took advantage of Verstappen’s issues in the third qualifying race to take the pole position, but he couldn’t close it out. Leclerc had to settle for a runner-up finish despite his best efforts, even though he was given a second chance to overtake the Red Bull driver after a late safety car was brought out.

Regardless of failing to win in Miami, he is still the current no.1 Formula One driver. The 24-year-old has collected 104 points from the first 5 races through sheer consistency and phenomenal driving.

He won in Bahrain and added another victory in Australia. Besides the 2 Ws, Leclerc has 2 runner-up finishes (Saudi Arabia and Miami), while his 6th-.place finish in Italy remains his worst placement of the 2022 Formula One season.

Ahead of the Barcelona GP, Leclerc is priced as the second favourite, which sounds fair, but he shouldn’t be overlooked. The layout of the Circuit de Catalunya’s second and third sectors should favour Ferrari over Red Bull, and if Leclerc can take advantage of that, he should be in the mix to claim his third W of the season.

Carlos Sainz – 11/1

Carols Sainz is the clear underdog to win the upcoming race, but if you’re looking to bet on F1 Spanish Grand Prix 2022 and are looking for an outsider to deliver, Sainz is your guy. Perhaps not as shocking, yet it’s important to note that it’s not Red Bull’s Sergio Perez but Sainz who is priced as the third favourite to win the Spanish Grand Prix, further confirming that Ferrari has better cars for the track.

Moreover, Sainz looked solid in Miami, where he claimed his third podium finish of the season and snapped a streak of back-to-back DNFs from Austria and Italy. So if we assume Sainz can avoid making any errors in Barca, he should be considered one of the main candidates to finish inside the top 3.

Past Winners of the Race

  • 2021 – Lewis Hamilton
  • 2020 – Lewis Hamilton
  • 2019 – Lewis Hamilton
  • 2018 – Lewis Hamilton
  • 2017 – Lewis Hamilton

Time and Date of the Race

The 2022 Spanish Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, May 22, at 15:00 (CET) at the world-renowned Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. It will mark the 6th race of the 2022 season and one of the most heavily-anticipated events.

You can follow the F1 race on all sporting TV channels or tune in for the event on most live streaming websites, including all in-play betting sites that offer live streaming services.

2022 Spanish GP Betting Tips

Realistically, there are only 2 drivers you can expect to win the Spanish Grand Prix, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any great betting opportunities to explore. And as history has taught us, you should always expect the unexpected in Formula One.

Charles Leclerc to Win – 5/4

We kick off our betting preview with a somewhat controversial 2022 Spanish GP prediction on Charles Leclerc to emerge as the winner over Max Verstappen. Although not a crazy choice, it might sound weird to trust the Ferrari driver over Mad Max, who heads to Barcelona with back-to-back wins under his belt.

But as noted above, Ferrari cars should be better suited for the winding nature of the Spanish track, and those small advantages are what can separate 2 of the current best F1 drivers. We already know that Leclerc can be just as fast as Verstappen, and he can be faster under the right circumstances.

Carlos Sainz Podium Finish – 8/13

A bet that won’t make you rich, but a gamble that makes a lot of sense. Carlos Sainz has done relatively well this season, despite his accidents in Australia and Italy, seeing how he has finished on the podium in all races he has finished.

Admittedly, there is a world where Sainz slips again and ends up in the gravel, but this is not something we are ready to bet on. Sainz is easily one of the top drivers in the field, and he now drives a car ideally suited for the challenges Circuit de Catalunya will offer.

Auto racing bookmakers offer 8/13 on Sainz to finish inside the top-3, which is a no brainer bet on F1 Spanish Grand Prix 2022.

Lewis Hamilton Podium Finish – 4/1

We live in a world where Lewis Hamilton is the 5th favourite to win the Spanish Grand Prix, and bookies offer odds as high as 4/1 on the 7-time world champion to finish on the podium. That might not sound too crazy, knowing how bad of a season Hamilton has had.

But it is exciting to see such a generous offer on a driver that has won 5 straight races in Spain. With 6 Spanish Grand Prix titles to his name, Hamilton is tied with the legendary Michael Schumacher as the winningest driver of the Barcelona GP, and he has not lost a single race since 2017 here.

Hamilton has yet to start posting solid results this season – but according to his stats – if there is one track where he could bounce back, it’s the Spanish Grand Prix. Sadly, we don’t believe he has the car needed to win, but he has had his highlights before and should be in the mix for a top-3 finish.

2022 Spanish GP Betting Tips – Bonus Selection

Similarly to Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas could surprise this weekend, not necessarily by winning his first-ever Spanish Grand Prix, but by competing for a top-6 finish. This season, he has just 2 top-6s, but the remaining 3 results show 8th, 7th, and DNF, so he wasn’t that far off by finishing 4 of the last 5 inside the top-6.

It’s also important to note that Bottas has not placed worse than third in Spain since 2018, with 2 runners-up and 2 bronze medals. At 10/11 to place inside the top-6, Bottas is a solid bet we can’t look past.

Prediction: Valtteri Bottas top 6 finish – 10/11
