Croatia currently tops the favorites list, with Baby Lasagne representing the Balkan state with his song “Rim Tim Tagi Dim.” While Croatia is at 2.00 (1/1), Switzerland is at 4.33 (10/3), with Nemo garnering significant attention from the music community. Ukraine is at 5.50 (9/2) currently to claim the third spot. Italy and Netherlands round up the top five at 6.50 (11/2) and 9.00 (8/1), respectively. We will discuss the potential winner of the competition further when we move to our expert picks.

Understanding the Eurovision Song Contest

From a humble beginning with just seven nations in 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has become a cultural phenomenon. Its popularity, particularly in Europe, is such that hosting the competition is often seen as a matter of national pride. It also leads to a significant surge in tourism for the host nation.

The 2024 iteration of the tournament will see artists from 37 countries fighting for the Eurovision 2024 crown. Throughout the competition’s history, a total of 52 nations have graced the Eurovision stage. Here’s a brief look at the format of the Eurovision 2024.

Eurovision 2024 Format and Structure

Similar to the preceding years, the Eurovision 2024 will follow a three-act structure. There will be two live semifinals and a grand final. This year, 32 teams will participate in the semifinals, and 21 will be given the green light for the grand final.

Countries had until mid-March to choose their Eurovision hopefuls. This was done through a televised national selection show, an internal selection process, or any other method chosen by the national broadcaster. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK form the “Big Five” and are in the Eurovision finals automatically. Their significant financial contributions to the event grant them a direct pass to the grand final without needing to compete in the semis.

Once all performances are over, each country awards points to their favorite songs. These points come from two sources: a jury of music professionals and viewers voting live from their home country. Viewers can cast their votes by phone, SMS, or the official app. However, voters cannot vote for their own country to maintain fairness.

In the semifinals, only the nations involved in that particular round, along with non-participating countries (collectively known as the “Rest of the World”), and a few representatives from the Big Five, are eligible to vote. Conversely, in the grand final, every competing country and the “Rest of the World” have the voting privilege.

Last Five Winners of the Eurovision

  • 2018 – Israel with “Toy”
  • 2019 – Netherlands with “Arcade”
  • 2021 – Italy with “Zitti e buoni”
  • 2022 – Ukraine with “Stefania”
  • 2023 – Sweden with “Tattoo”

Swedish star Loreen was the runaway favorite to win Eurovision 2023, but she had to overcome strong competition from Finland’s Käärijä, who set the Liverpool Arena alight with his powerful vocals and flamboyant performance. Can the Swedes hold on to their crown this year? Let’s get to our 2024 Eurovision predictions and find out.

After witnessing a marvelous rehearsal performance in Madrid, we are pretty convinced that the Swiss binary icon Nemo will take the Eurovision trophy home. Their song “The Code” is a wild mix of drum & bass, pop-rap, and opera, unlike anything heard at Eurovision before. This entry somehow avoids disaster and offers a fresh, unconventional sound. Also, the song’s strong message of self-acceptance resonates with the changing social dynamics and politics in Europe.

A successful live performance of “The Code” will be a remarkable feat to achieve due to its demanding vocal requirements. If Nemo can marginally improve his Madrid display, or even match it, it could deliver Switzerland the country’s third Eurovision title, 36 years after a certain Céline Dion had hoisted the “Fahne” in Dublin.

Twin brothers Marcus and Martinus are set to carry the torch for the defending champions in the final showdown in Malmö on Saturday, May 11th. With their song “Unforgettable,” they aim to leave a lasting impression on the crowd and the juries. While their track has claimed the top spot in Sweden, the duo faces the challenge of striking a universal chord with audiences worldwide. We, however, believe it’s good enough for a top-five finish, especially at such spicy odds.
