Understanding the ATP Masters in Monte-Carlo

Before we get into our tennis Monte-Carlo Masters betting tips, a little context. This is the third Masters 1000 event of the season and sees 56 players compete for 1000 ranking points and a bucket-load of prize money. More importantly, it marks the first in a series of clay-court tournaments heading up to the year’s next Grand Slam in May.

ATP Monte-Carlo Masters History and Court Specifics

This tournament has a history of being incredibly volatile. Its position in the calendar – the first clay event many players will contest since last May – plus the conditions it’s played in making it ripe for upsets.

Speed-wise, the Monte-Carlo Masters is as slow as a court gets. This means the ball will slow down and sit up when it strikes the court, favoring those who 1) have physical games 2) are intelligent point constructors, and 3) like to run around the forehand. It’s also typically windy, making it harder for big servers to dominate.

Carlos Alcaraz @ 2.50 (3/2)

World number three Carlos Alcaraz is a phenomenal clay-court player but has never won a match at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Still, bookies think it’ll be his year this year and have him as a heavy favorite.

Novak Djokovic @ 6.50 (11/2)

Djokovic made a run to the final in Miami late last month, but question marks still hang over the Serbian’s level. Bookies put him well back in the market from Alcaraz, though he still deserves serious consideration in any 2025 ATP Monte-Carlo predictions.

Stefanos Tsitsipas @ 9.50 (17/2)

This is Stefanos Tsitsipas’ best event by a million miles, and the Greek is third-favorite here for good reason – he’s won three of the past four editions. But he’s in lousy form at the moment.

Alexander Zverev @ 12.00 (11/1)

Another option for ATP Monte-Carlo Masters 2025 betting picks is world number two Alexander Zverev, who is on the fourth line of betting this week. Again, bad form, but a strong clay player.

Casper Ruud @ 15.00 (14/1)

Betting sites in Monaco place Casper Ruud on the fifth line of betting, with the Norwegian entering his favored section of the calendar as a defending finalist here.

Djokovic hasn’t won a title since the Summer Olympics and hasn’t lifted the trophy in Monte-Carlo since 2015. In fact, this has been a bit of a boogie tournament for him–the Serb typically takes a while to build up his clay-court fitness and usually arrives in Monte-Carlo quite under-cooked.

That won’t be the case this week, however. Djokovic also has a history of being very poor in March over recent years, not making the quarters in Indian Wells or Miami since 2016. Well guess what he did 10 days ago? That’s right–he made the final of Miami.

This is an entirely different Djokovic arriving in Monte-Carlo this week compared to years gone by. He’s locked in and will sense an opportunity with the rest of the top 10 being uncharacteristically out of form this season and Jannik Sinner still serving his three-month ban.

He’ll also be keenly aware of how numbered his days are given his injury struggles over the past 18 months, and will want to make the most of this window to bag his 100th title and arrive in Paris primed for Grand Slam title number 25, too.

So if Djokovic is winning this thing, who’s he beating in the final? We say Casper Ruud. The Norwegian has had a better-than-average hardcourt season by his standards, going 12-4 this year. He’s already made the transition to clay beautifully, winning UTS Nimes over the weekend.

We all know that this is the two months of the year that Ruud shows up the most. His past form matters little – though it’s a bonus. His heavy topspin is perfectly suited for these slow conditions, as evidenced by his run to the final last year.

This, combined with his favorable draw – an unproved Jack Draper in the quarters and the mercurial Andrey Rublev or Carlos Alcaraz in the semis if they get that far – make him the best bet to meet Djokovic in the final.
