Understanding the ATP Shanghai Masters Tennis Tournament

Before we dive into our 2024 ATP Shanghai Masters predictions, a little context. Outside of Grand Slams and the year-end finals, this tournament is as big as it gets on the ATP Tour. As a Masters 1000 event, the winner will receive 1000 ranking points and well over $1.2 million, making it a significant stoppage in the tennis calendar.

Shanghai Masters History & Court Specifics

The Shanghai Masters is a relatively new addition to the ATP Tour, with just 12 editions played after its inception in 2009. Since then, it has been dominated by players who thrive in fast conditions due to its slick court surface. Big servers and aggressive players such as Hubert Hurkacz and Roger Federer have had success here, while Djokovic holds a record four titles.

Behind this trio, there’s a significant drop back to the fourth favorite, with Alexander Zverev paying 9.00 (8/1) and Daniil Medvedev trailing on 13.00 (12/1).

It’s been a strange old season for Djokovic. By and large, he’s looked a shadow of himself, with the exception of the Paris Olympics, where he played lights-out tennis to complete a career goal of winning a gold medal. With that achieved, we saw a very lackluster Djokovic at the US Open, with the Serbian crashing out second round to Alexei Popyrin. It’s been the better part of a month since then.

Typically, we wouldn’t pick Djokovic in this spot – in many ways, it feels like he’s started his Christmas holiday early, and the motivation is low post-Olympics – but he’s simply got too good of a draw in Shanghai to ignore. The 24-time Grand Slam champion avoids both Sinner and Alcaraz in his half, instead getting paired with the likes of Zverev (recently in hospital for pneumonia) and Taylor Fritz (owns a 9-0 head-to-head against).

We expect he’ll get through to the final, but not quite have it in the tank to lift the trophy.

Daniil Medvedev to Win @ 13.00 (12/1)

Surprisingly, we’re actually behind Medvedev to prevail in Shanghai. The Russian is a past champion here, and while he’s had a patchy, titleless season in 2024, there’s no better time for him to pick up his first of the year.

We’ve already touched on why Djokovic and Zverev could struggle to win the tournament. The other two favorites, Sinner and Alcaraz, have both played a lot of tennis recently – in fact, at the time of writing this, they’re due to play in the China Open final. With the ATP Finals approaching, it would be no surprise if both simply went off the boil this week.

The speed of court suits Medvedev in Shanghai, and we think things will open up for him. At 13.00 (12/1), we think he’s a great bet.
