Again, this is a two-horse race, with Novak Djokovic inches ahead of Carlos Alcaraz. With these two favorites paying 2.20 (6/5) and 2.75 (7/4), there’s a big jump back to the next favorite, 2021 winner Daniil Medvedev who is on 10.00 (9/1). Toronto champion Jannik Sinner comes in next at 15.00 (14/1) before another big drop in the odds to the fifth favorite Alexander Zverev at 29.00 (28/1).

Understanding the US Open 2023 Tennis Grand Slam

It’s the fourth Grand Slam of the year and by far the most volatile. With no player able to defend their title since 2008 and five different winners across the past five years, the US Open has a reputation of being the Grand Slam that produces surprises. There’s nothing particularly unique about its hard courts causing this – it’s more the position in the tennis calendar at the end of eight long months.

Past Five Winners of the Tennis US Open

  • 2018 – Novak Djokovic beat Juan Martin del Potro
  • 2019 – Rafael Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev
  • 2020 – Dominic Thiem beat Alexander Zverev
  • 2021 – Daniil Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic
  • 2022 – Carlos Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud

Being the best player in the history of the sport means that almost any draw looks favorable, but there’s no denying that Djokovic has received an excellent draw in the 2023 US Open. Seeds in his quarter are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz, players he holds 11-2 and 7-0 head-to-heads against. His opening matches avoid any mercurial names, while the seed he’s most likely to meet in the semi-finals is Holger Rune, who’s yet to master outdoor hard courts or make it this far in a Grand Slam.

The bottom line is Djokovic should walk into the US Open final with far, far less court time than his likely opponent, Carlos Alcaraz. Given the fine margins between the two of them this year (their last two meetings have gone to a deciding set), this could make all the difference.

High-Odds Predictions for 2023 APT US Open

This is a more risky bet that zooms out from the Alcaraz vs Djokovic rivalry and focuses on the guy who is hungry enough to fight for the title in New York. Of course, Zverev’s road won’t be a meadow walk with a quarter containing Carlos Alcaraz (defending champion) and Jannik Sinner (Toronto champion).

He was not so far from beating Djokovic in Cincinnati Masters 2023, beating Medvedev on his way to the semifinal. Also, he shouldn’t feel too much pressure after winning the Hamburg Open at the end of July, having all the eyes on his first Grand Slam. Of course, this is a long shot, but Alexander looks like a great pick at crazy 29.0 (28/1) odds.

Hubert Hurkacz to Make the Final @ 21.00 (20/1)

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has been playing some great tennis in recent months. The world No 17 twice pushed Alcaraz to deciding sets across the Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, at one stage being a point away from victory. Throw in two rounds of 16 runs at Grand Slams this year and a title in Marseilles, and his credentials are there.

What makes Hurkacz a great bet for the final is his draw, however. The Pole is in Daniil Medvedev’s quarter, who is looking ripe for an upset with Max Purcell and Alex de Minaur in his 16th, two strong serve and volleyers who are bad matchups for the Russian. Andrey Rublev is also a risk in Hurkacz’s section of the draw, having recently lost to Emil Ruusuvuori and having to face the Finn again in the opening round.

This means that Hurkacz, who is playing great tennis, could have a series of straightforward matches for the big-server to make the semi-finals. Here, he’d play Alcaraz, most likely a man who he’s pushed right to the limits over the past fortnight, giving him every chance of making his first Grand Slam final.

For those who want their 2023 US Open tennis championship predictions to bring faster returns, we see an opening-round upset occurring as Felix Auger-Alliasime takes on Mackenzie McDonald.

Auger-Aliassime is 3-10 in his past 13 matches and feels like a walking upset. Pair him against McDonald, who has two top-10 wins in the past two weeks and four in total in 2023, and it’s looking like this match-up won’t go well for the Canadian. Especially considering McDonald will likely get a spot in one of the big stadiums, with a raucous American crowd behind him.

The final Grand Slam of the year is here, and the storylines heading into New York are fascinating. Will the Alcaraz vs Djokovic rivalry write its next chapter? Can a new champion emerge at the US Open? Who will fall victim to an upset in the opening rounds?

We say 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will yet again finish on top, winning the US Open for the first time since 2018 after victories at Australian and French Open. Also, Canada’s Auger-Aliassime is your best bet to suffer an early loss at Flushing Meadows.
