Despite losing this week, Carlos Alcaraz leads the 2023 tennis Shanghai Masters odds at 2.75 (7/4). Behind him, Daniil Medvedev is not far off the pace on 4.75 (7/2), as is Jannik Sinner on 7.50 (13/2). These three are the strong favorites, with Alexander Zverev and Andrey Rublev rounding out the top five betting odds at a distant 19.00 (18/1).

Anyone who watched the number that Jannik Sinner did on top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the China Open this week will need little persuasion to take this bet. The young Italian has found another gear in this stage of the season, as he moves to a career-high of No. 4 in the world and sprints towards qualification at the ATP Finals in Turin.

The fact that Sinner is contesting the final in Beijing on Wednesday is not a concern. As a seed, he gets a bye to begin his campaign in Shanghai, plus he proved at the Sunshine Double earlier this year that back-to-back deep runs at Masters tournaments are no issue for the 22-year-old. If Sinner plays anywhere near the way he did against Alcaraz in Beijing, then he’s a great shot at winning here in Shanghai.

It’s not been pretty watching for Holger Rune fans recently, with the Dane holding a 1-7 record across his last eight matches–with his one win coming against the equally woeful Felix Auger-Aliassime. However, this time last year, Rune was in a similar boat. He then went on a 19-2 run to close out the season, making four consecutive finals and winning two titles, including one over Djokovic at the Paris Masters.

Notably, all these big results were on indoor hard courts. Could a similar thing happen this year? All evidence points towards yes, given that Rune’s last big run was birthed out of a patch of poor form too. Chances are Rune will be playing free and get some big results, and in a weak quarter, this could be just the boost he needs.

One quarter at the Shanghai Masters is ridiculously strong, and that’s the fourth quarter. It holds three of the four semi-finalists from this week’s China Open (Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev), who also happen to be three of the top five favorites in the betting odds. Add in a healthy dose of dark horses, too – Andy Murray, Roman Safiullin, Sebastian Korda, Ben Shelton, and Felix Auger-Aliassime, and this quarter is far too stacked to not take a wager on the winner coming from here. We say it will be Sinner still, but if not him, then one of these other names.

As the ATP Tour barrels towards the end of the season, one of the most fascinating portions of the calendar is set to unfold: the indoor hard court swing. It’s a time when some players fade, and others catch fire, as we saw last year.

We say it’s Jannik Sinner who will continue to burn brightly in Shanghai, with the 22-year-old backing up his Beijing performance and winning a second Masters 1000 title in 2023. Watch out for a resurgent Holger Rune, however, who will be looking to wind back the clock to this time last year when he looked like a clear top-three player in the world.
