CHAN 2022: Key Info About Africa Football Event

After the knockouts last year, the sixth edition of the African Nations Championship is back in the winter, featuring the best teams by region in the continent. Defending champions Morocco would be hoping to retain their title after their magical feats at the Qatar World Cup 2022. Algeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast are some of the top teams looking for a first title win in this tournament, while Morocco can become the record title holder if they emerge victorious in Algeria.

One has to distinguish this tournament from the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), as here, only the players from African clubs can participate. So, no global stars will play here, making the event more unpredictable and interesting for betting with a live betting shop.

Morocco to Win

The Atlas Lions is one of the best teams in Africa and although they would be missing a few important players in this tournament, they still have a very good team and are one of the big boys in this competition. Morocco has already won this competition a record two times alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and are the current champion after beating Mali to the trophy in 2020. They are easily a top-three favorite to win the CHAN 2022 and approve the odds to finish first in Algeria.

Senegal to Win

Senegal impressed viewers at the World Cup 2022 by reaching the knockouts. Although a key part of the Senegal national team was made up of players at European clubs, the Lions of Teranga have very good players at the local level and would be gunning for a first title win in this tournament. They won the last edition of the African Cup of Nations, and the odds approve they are one of the favorites at the CHAN 2022.

Ghana to Win

Ghana crashed out of the group stage in the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, but they have a chance to add silverware to their cabinet in this tournament. The Black Stars have good players playing their trade in the local league, and these players could finally get a chance to represent their country after missing out on the World Cup. The odds for Ghana to be victorious is a good shot at the African Nations Championship 2022.

Cameroon to Win

Cameroon might have lost a couple of players over the years, but new talents have emerged. Souaibou Marou of Coton Spot is expected to lead the line for the Indomitable Lions in this tournament. Cameroon hosted the last edition, where they finished fourth despite the odds and would be looking to go further in this competition.

Algeria to Win

The Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 is one of the most developed African football leagues, giving the Desert Warriors an edge over most teams in this competition. Algeria is also the host nation of the African Nations Championship 2022, which is a big advantage for them. They would be looking to clinch this prize on home soil to prove the odds by Algerian bookmakers for their outright victory.

History Of the African Nations Championship

The African Nations Championship, also known as CHAN, is a biennial African national association football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Only homegrown players playing in the local leagues are eligible to participate in this competition. The idea of this tournament was to give homegrown talents a chance to represent their nation at the continental level.

Morocco Celebrating Victory at CHAN 2020

Ivory Coast was the host of the first edition, which the Democratic Republic of the Congo won. Cameroon hosted the last edition of this tournament, but it was Morocco who grabbed the biggest prize and is the defending champion heading into this competition. The Atlas Lions have won the last two CHAN tournaments and can make it three in a row.

  • 2018 – Morocco 4-0 Nigeria
  • 2016 – DR Congo 3-0 Mali
  • 2014 – Libya 0-0 (a.e.t 4-3) Ghana
  • 2011 – Tunisia 3-0 Angola

2022 African Nations Championship Format & Overview

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) is different from the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The main difference between the African Nations Championships and the African Cup of Nations is that the competing national teams must be composed of players playing in their domestic leagues. Players from EU clubs like Sadio Mane, Thomas Partey, or Hakimi are ineligible to participate in the African Nations Championship 2022. Still, it will be an interesting event for many European scouts to explore the squads and find the future brilliants.

There are five groups in the African Nations Championship 2022, with 18 teams participating. These groups are formed based on qualification by region. Group A and B have two spots for qualification to the next round, while Groups C, D, and E have one spot. The team(s) with the highest number of points qualifies for the knockout stages, which start from the round of 16 to the finals.

Africa Nations Championship 2022 Table & Group Stage Tips

Africa Nations Championship 2022 Group Participants

Group A

The Algerian National team is the best side in this group, and barring any surprises, they are expected to finish top of the group. Libya beat Botswana by a goal to nil to reach this stage and can pull off an upset in this group.

Ethiopia is the lowest-ranking team in Group A, and they have an uphill task of reaching the knockout stages. Mozambique got the better of the Benin Republic and would be hoping to book a ticket to the knockouts to pick up their first-ever trophy.

Matchup Date Prediction
Algeria vs Libya January 13, 2023 Algeria to win
Ethiopia vs Mozambique January 14, 2023 Ethiopia to win
Mozambique vs Libya January 17, 2023 Draw
Algeria vs Ethiopia January 17, 2023 Algeria to win
Libya vs Ethiopia January 21, 2023 Ethiopia to win
Mozambique vs Algeria January 21, 2023 Draw

Group B

This is arguably the toughest group at the African Nations Championship 2022. DR Congo has won this tournament on two occasions, only Morocco can match that record. Ivory Coast failed to qualify for the World Cup but has a very good team to go all the way in this competition. They are the second-best team in group B, only behind Senegal.

Instead, Senegal would be looking to extend continental dominance after winning the AFCON and a good outing at the FIFA World Cup 2022. Uganda has the weakest squad in this group and can only hope for a miracle.

Matchup Date Prediction
DR Congo vs Uganda January 14, 2023 DR Congo to win
Ivory Coast vs Senegal January 14, 2023 Senegal to win
DR Congo vs Ivory Coast January 18, 2023 DR Congo
Senegal vs Uganda January 18, 2023 Senegal to win
Senegal vs DR Congo January 22, 2023 Draw
Uganda vs Ivory Coast January 22, 2023 Ivory Coast

Group C

Morocco is better than the other three teams in this group, but they have to top the group if they are to retain their CHAN title. Ghana is the second strongest side in Group C, but they have a difficult task competing for a spot with Morocco. In this contest, Morocco betting sites expect their compatriots to win the matchup and group overall.

Madagascar is currently ranked 102nd in the FIFA World rankings, and not much is expected from them. Sudan is the weakest team in Group C, but they won the African Nations Championship in 2011 and should not be underestimated.

Matchup Date Prediction
Morocco vs Sudan January 15, 2023 Morocco to win
Madagascar vs Ghana January 15, 2023 Ghana to win
Morocco vs Madagascar January 19, 2023 Morocco to win
Ghana vs Sudan January 19, 2023 Draw
Sudan vs Madagascar January 23, 2023 Sudan to win
Ghana vs Morocco January 23, 2023 Draw

Group D

Angola was one of the most improved teams in Africa last year. They were the runners-up to Sudan in 2011 and would fancy their chances of a knockout. Mali has the best team in Group D and has competed fairly with the best teams in the continent, finishing as runners-up twice in 2016 and 2020. No doubt online Mali bookies see their team closer to the final rather than struggling in the group matches.

Mauritania is expected to finish bottom of this group with a weak national championship. They don’t have much quality in their team, and it would take a lot for them to make it to the next round.

Matchup Date Prediction
Mali vs Angola January 16, 2023 Draw
Angola vs Mauritania January 20, 2023 Angola to win
Mauritania vs Mali January 24, 2023 Mali to win

Group E

Cameroon has a fairly easy run of games in Group E and should appear in the round of 16. The Indomitable Lions have not won the African Nations Championship since its inception, and they have a good shot at winning popular bets with their current squad. At least, that is the position of the best Cameroon bookmakers believing in their side.

Congo has one continental trophy – an AFCON win in 1972. They would be ready to punish any complacency from Cameroon. Niger is the lowest-ranking team in this group and was winless in all competitions last year.

Matchup Date Prediction
Cameroon vs Congo January 16, 2023 Cameroon to win
Congo vs Niger January 20, 2023 Congo to win
Niger vs Cameroon January 24, 2023 Cameroon to win

African Nations Championship 2022 – Group Stage Predictions

Algeria vs Libya – Algeria to Win & Under 3.5 @ 1.91 (10/11)

Algeria missed out on the World Cup, but they have a great team to go far in this tournament. The fact that the African Nations Championship favors local leagues means that Algeria is a top three favorite in this competition. In Group A, Algeria is the only team ranked top 50 on the FIFA World rankings, while the rest sits outside of the top 100. The gap in quality between Algeria and Libya is very evident, and the Desert Warriors should easily win this game.

Although a win for Algeria is the most likely outcome here, this game is expected to be close, with a few top performers like Riyad Mahrez ineligible for this game, and we should expect less than three goals in this match. Algeria has won all two meetings against Libya and both games finished with two goals or less. Libya lost their last game by two goals to nil against Equatorial Guinea. A bet on Algeria to get a low-scoring win is the best available option in this fixture.

Ivory Coast vs Senegal – Both Teams to Score @ 2.25 (5/4)

Ivory Coast and Senegal are the strongest teams in Group B. With both teams meeting in the first game of the group stage, there is a very good chance that each side would go for the win rather than a conservative approach. Both teams are averaging over a goal per game recently.

Ivory Coast has scored in their last three games with a total of eight goals, while Senegal has scored five goals in their last three matches. Four out of five games between these two sides have seen both teams get on the scoresheet. Punters looking for high football odds should back both teams to score in this fixture.

Morocco vs Sudan – Morocco to Win @ 1.73 (8/11)

The defending champions resume their title charge with a game against Sudan. Morocco set the record for the best finish for an African team in the FIFA World Cup 2022. Head Coach Walid Regragui has impressed a lot since joining the Atlas Lions, and he has gotten the better of top teams. This game should be an easy win for the Moroccans.

Sudan has lost three of their last five games in all competitions, with just one win in that period. Both teams have met three times, and Morocco has been victorious on two occasions, including the previous two meetings. A bet on Morocco to get all three points against Sudan is worth the offer.
