Understanding the WST Classic 2023

It’s not every day that the World Snooker Tour adds a new event to its calendar, but that’s exactly what is happening this Thursday.

This week will see the inaugural edition of the WST Classic go down at the Morningside Arena, Leicester, as the WST adds an additional event to its calendar to replace the canceled Turkish Masters. As the 13th ranking event of the 2022-23 snooker season, the WST Classic 2023 will see 128 players compete for a prize pool of £427,000.

With Shaun Murphy in hot form and Ronnie O’Sullivan an ever-present threat, who will claim the first WST Classic crown?

2023 WST Classic Betting Guide

UK online bookies have a range of fantastic odds in store for this week’s WST Classic 2023. We’ve combed through all the best websites and apps for punters and chosen our top three bets from the online bookies to make:

Ronnie O’Sullivan to Win @ 6.00 (5/1)

129 days. That’s how long it’s been since Ronnie O’Sullivan has won a title on the World Snooker Tour. For a man that has won a total of 86 different titles across his career and consistently picks up an average of four titles per year across his 20 years at the top of the snooker world, this is a dangerous omen. O’Sullivan is well overdue for another title, and while his form has been patchy the past four months, it feels like the snooker GOAT is simply a ticking timebomb, waiting to strike again.

With a favorable draw and the opportunity to make history by claiming the inaugural WST Classic trophy, expect Ronnie O’Sullivan to be a hard beat this week.

Shaun Murphy to Make Final @ 6.50 (11/2)

While O’Sullivan has been hibernating, Shaun Murphy has been exploding up the snooker rankings. The 40-year-old English man carved his way through the field at the Players Championship three weeks ago, defeating Ali Carter in the final to win his 10th career ranking event.

The win came from Murphy’s deep run at the Welsh Open 2023, where he fell at the last hurdle to Robert Milkins in the final. With the ability to currently beat top ten players at will, there’s no reason to believe Shaun Murphy won’t continue this strong form and make a deep run at the WST Classic this week. While it’s tempting to pick him to win, a safer option is simply making the final at 6.50 (11/2).

John Higgins to Win Fourth Quarter @ 6.00 (5/1)

Speaking of in-form snooker players, Scotsman John Higgins sees the ball cleanly in 2023. The former World No.1 is down at No.11 in the world right now but has been performing well in the Championship League the last few weeks. With wins over Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, and Jack Lisowski already in March, the 47-year-old is experiencing some rich form.

Drawn in a quarter alongside Mark Selby and Kyren Wilson, Higgins is a strong chance at topping the quarter and making a quarterfinal appearance in Leicester.

  • Ronnie O’Sullivan to Win @ 6.00 (5/1)
  • Shaun Murphy to Make Final @ 6.50 (11/2)
  • John Higgins to Win Fourth Quarter @ 6.00 (5/1)

The best of the best in snooker will be jostling to claim the inaugural WST Classic 2023 title this week, presenting unique opportunities for betting online. We say one of the all-time greats, Ronnie O’Sullivan, will rise to the surface to claim yet another trophy, but his campaign won’t be without a few rivals. Shaun Murphy and John Higgins are both in great nick, while the rest of the world’s top five are also waiting eagerly for O’Sullivan to slip. Tune in on Thursday to see how the balls break in Leicester, England.
