2022 PGA Championship (May 19-22) Betting Tips & Predictions

2022 Pga Championship Betting Preview

The 104th PGA Championship is set to kick off at Southern Hills Country Club in Oklahoma this Thursday, May 19, when the world’s top golf players will compete for the coveted trophy and the lion’s share of the $2.16 million prize pool. It marked the 5th time the Southern Hills Country Club hosted the tournament, setting the new record for the most PGA Championship hosted.

No other venue has ever staged the PGA Championship more than 4 times, with 7 different courses tied for second with 3 appearances apiece. Moreover, the Southern Hills has hosted 7 Major Championships, including 3 PGAs and US Opens between 1958-77-2001.

However, while the Southern Hills is a known venue in professional golf, this week’s test promises to be much different from the ones the players faced years ago. It introduces an exciting situation as PGA Tour golfer’s past success in Oklahoma doesn’t guarantee they’ll deliver this week.

As a result, the 2022 PGA Championship offers plenty of excellent betting opportunities at the offered PGA Championship odds to win, which we will explore in our betting preview, where we check the best golf PGA Championship 2022 odds and provide you with expert picks.

History of the Event

The Professional Golfers Association of America (US PGA) was formed in February 1916 after Rodman Wanamaker started the formal organisation of the PGA. In October of the same year, the first US PGA Championship took place, and it has been staged ever since, except for in 1917 and 2018 due to World War I and 1943, making this year’s iteration the 104th.

Unfortunately, since the PGA Championship was staged in August after the other 3 Majors had ended, the US PGA Championship carried an unenviable tag as the least prestigious major of the 4. But things changed in 2019 when it moved to May and became the second PGA Tour major of the year.

Nowadays, the US PGA Championship is regarded as one of the most prestigious golf tournaments of the year, with a sizable prize pool and a field consisting of some of the best players in the world.

As such, it’s one of the most viewed golf tournaments of the year and an extremely popular event in the betting world, usually resulting in excellent online bet bonuses and plenty of excellent wagering opportunities we can take advantage of. So without further ado, let’s jump into our PGA Championship 2022 predictions and tips.

Golf PGA Championship 2022 Odds – Bookies Favourites

The 2022 PGA Championship odds have been out for a while now, and as we get closer to the tournament kickoff, the prices should come very close to the figures the golf players deserve. And even now, we’re not too far off that – at least as far as the top of the outrights betting markets is concerned.

Scottie Scheffler (11/1)

The current no.1 golf player in the world, Scottie Scheffler, is priced as the main favourite on the 2022 PGA Championship betting odds markets. And that makes a lot of sense.

He has shown incredible growth this season, and the fact that he is ranked no.1 (he was no.24 this time last year) proves that Scheffler is not someone to ignore. In addition, he has won 4 times on the PGA Tour since the start of February, which includes some very impressive trophies.

Most notably, Scheffler emerged as the winner at Augusta – his first Major triumph, but it isn’t like anyone can feel shocked about that. Scheffler was very solid in 2021 when he claimed 3 top-10 finishes at the Majors, proving he has the tools to compete at the highest level. Moreover, Scheffler has shown that he can handle the pressure, which could be the difference-maker in the final stretch of the Major.

Jon Rahm (12/1)

Jon Rahm travels to Oklahoma as the second favourite to come out on top, and that’s fair. He is the reigning US Open champion and undeniably one of the best golfers of our time.

However, Rahm has had a slow start to the year relative to his standards. He placed T14 at the American Express, T3 at Farmers Insurance, T21 at Genesis Open, T17 at Arnold Palmer, disappointed with a T55 at The Players, and could only manage T27 at Masters.

However, his luck turned around in Mexico at the start of May when he claimed his first trophy of the year. Will Rahm manage to keep the wind in his sails and deliver at the PGA Championship remains to be seen, but there is a good reason why his odds to win the PGA Championship 2022 are pretty low.

Rory McIlroy (14/1)

Rory McIlroy has not won a Major title in over 7 years, but the 33-year-old is someone who can surprise. McIlroy’s results have been relatively mediocre this year, but he didn’t look too bad either.

He placed 5th at Wells Fargo earlier this month and was second at Masters in April. Before that, his results were a mixed bag, with a T13 at Arnold Palmer, a T10 at Genesis Open, a bronze medal from Dubai Desert Classic, and a T12 at Abu Dhabi. Nevertheless, with the results he posted last month, McIlroy deserves recognition as one of the main favourites to win the 2022 PGA Championship.

Past Winners of the Tournament

  • 2021 – Phil Mickelson
  • 2020 – Collin Morikawa
  • 2019 – Brooks Koepka
  • 2018 – Brooks Koepka
  • 2017 – Justin Thomas

Time and Date of the Event

The 2022 PGA Championship is slated for May 19-22 at Southern Hills Country Club in Oklahoma. It will mark the second PGA Tour Major of the year and is one of the most prestigious golf tournaments.

If you want to follow the action, you can do so on all sporting TV channels and most live-streaming platforms. Alternatively, you can also watch the live stream available on bookmakers’ websites, as any live sportsbook list the event under the live streaming tabs.

2022 PGA Championship Betting Tips

The 2022 PGA Championship will welcome 156 players, and even though many can potentially win, only a handful have a realistic chance to emerge as the winners. Technically the top favourites are the most likely to hoist the trophy and are priced at the lowest odds, but that doesn’t make them the best bets.

Our PGA Championship predictions for 2022 will search for value bets on outsiders the bookmakers have undervalued and offer us an excellent gambling opportunity.

Cameron Smith to Win – 22/1

Most bookmakers now offer 10 places for anyone who wishes to play on each-way markets, but we kick off our PGA Championship 2022 predictions with an outright selection on Cameron Smith.

There is no denying that Smith is an elite-level putter. After carefully examining his performances this year and his overall ability, it’s fair to say he has no weaknesses. Admittedly, he has yet to win a Major, but at 28-years-of-age, there is still plenty of time for him to achieve that feat.

Smith travels to Oklahoma for his third victory of 2022, having won the Players Championship and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. And if his performance at the 2 events is any indication, Smith is destined to be in the mix to win the PGA Championship, mainly because the venue should suit him.

He is ranked inside the top-10 for greens in regulation, is one of the best scramblers on tour, and likely won’t mind the wind. Overall, Smith is more than capable of winning and is one of the best bets you can take at the odds online bookies offer.

Shane Lowry to Win E/W – 28/1

Shane Lowry seems slightly underestimated at 28/1 and is an excellent bet in our book. He has the right skill set to put up a fight in Oklahoma, and as long as he can play his game, there is no denying that Lowry can go all the way.

The 2019 Open Champion has yet to win anything this year, but he came close several times. He placed second at Honda Classic and was third at The Heritage and the US Masters.

Interestingly, Daniel Berger is the only man with a better Sand Save % than Lowry, whereas the Irishman ranks 5th on the PGA Tour in scrambling.

Hideki Matsuyama to Win E/W – 25/1

The Oklahoma course has undergone many changes over the years. Even many pro golfers confirmed that, so it only makes sense to pay close attention to great chippers players. Still, the Southern Hills has hosted the 2021 Senior PGA Championship, and if there is one thing we can take away from it, the Greens in Regulation is the standout stat.

As such, we can’t look past Hideki Matsuyama. This year, he is 4th on the all-around ranking, which helps our pick since the Southern Hills requires players to be great at all facets of the game.

Moreover, Matsuyama is 7th for Greens in Regulation, 6th for approach, 44th in Driving Distance, and 22nd in scrambling. And we must also touch on Matsuyama’s 7 top-20s in his last 8 visits.

Matsuyama might not seem like the main favourite to win it all, but he has the right skill set to make some noise. Interestingly, he won the Sony Open in January (where 7 of the last US PGA champions won earlier the same year), which is just another thing going for him.

PGA Championship Predictions 2022 – Bonus Pick

We end our PGA Championship 2022 predictions with a recommendation on Talor Gooch at 100/1, an excellent pick with 10 each-way places. His stats are not exceptional, but Gooch is a perfect chipper, is 69th in Driving Distance and has a local angle, as he went to Oklahoma State and still lives in Oklahoma.

As for his other stats, Gooch is 26th for Greens in Regulation, 2nd on All-Around and 7th for SG. Those skills helped him win the RSM Classic in November, and they might help him cause an upset this week on his home soil.

Prediction: Talor Gooch to win e/w – 100/1

Our PGA Championship 2022 Predictions

  1. Cameron Smith to win – 22/1
  2. Shane Lowry to win e/w – 28/1
  3. Hideki Matsuyama to win e/w – 25/1
  4. Talor Gooch to win e/w – 100/1

With that, we end our betting preview, providing 4 excellent 2022 PGA Championship betting tips at the best golf wagering odds. Now visit your favourite bookie and place your bets before the tournament begins on Thursday, May 19!
