The 2022 US Open is set for June 16-19, marking the 122nd edition of the US golf tournament, which will feature some of the best golf players in the world vying for the lion’s share of the $12.5 million prize pool.

As one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour, the US Open is a golf tournament no sports fan should miss, but primarily it’s a tournament every sports bettor looks forward to. With a plethora of in-play sportsbooks offering online welcome bonuses and other promotions for the US Open, it’s easy to see why it is a popular event among sports bettors.

So here is our free betting preview for the 2022 US Open, with our expert picks and selections. So, if you’re wondering which US Open golf bet to place, keep reading!

History of the Event

The US Open was first held in 1895 when Horace Rawlins won the tournament and pocketed a whopping $150 after posting a 36-hole total of 173. A lot has changed since then, namely the size of the prize pool and the transition to a 72-hole stroke play in 1899.

Throughout the years, the US Open has established itself as a nomadic championship as it’s been held at various locations. It initially used to follow the US Masters, the second Major of the season but was moved to third (of 4th) in 2019 following the rework of the  PGA Tour schedule.

The 2022 US Open will mark the 122nd edition of the event as it heads back to the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The last time the US Open took place at the Country Club was way back in 1988 when Curtis Strange defeated Nick Faldo in an 18-hole playoff. The only 2 other times that the US Open was staged at this course was in 1913 and 1963.

2022 US Open Golf Odds – Bookies Favourites

The 2022 US Open Golf odds are already out, as in-play sportsbooks did not wait too long following the conclusion of the Canadian Open to open up the betting markets. Although the golf US Open 2022 odds were available way ahead, the outrights shifted quite a bit over the last few weeks, primarily dictated by the players’ results in the previous events.

And now, any USA bookie list includes just 4 golf players who are considered but more likely to win than the rest of the field. Yet of the 4, Rory McIlroy stands out as the most likely event champion.

Rory McIlroy – 10/1

Rory McIlroy has been displaying exceptional week-to-week form this season and is one of the most consistent performers of the year. McIlroy deserves to be recognised as a player with the shortest 2022 US Open golf betting odds.

He travels to the Country Club after claiming his second Canadian Open title on Sunday, but that is just one of many great results the 33-year-old has achieved this year. He also posted a brace of top-10s in the opening 2 Majors, so it’s more than fair that McIlroy has the tools to make it happen this week.

However, it seems that McIlroy has some mental block preventing him from winning his 5th Major. He is good enough to do it, but if history has taught us anything, McIlroy always finds a way to stumble.

Nevertheless, we feel that once McIlroy finally gets it together and wins one of the big titles again, it will be by quite a significant margin. Will that happen at the US Open? Only time will tell.

Justin Thomas – 12/1

Justin Thomas heads to the US Open as the second-favourite to win the tournament, priced at relatively low golf US Open 2022 odds (12/1), which makes sense.

He won the US PGA Championship last month and has been in great form this season. Most notably, he also placed third at the Canadian Open last week with -15, just -4 short of the eventual champion Rory McIlroy.

Between the 2 tournaments, Thomas has slipped at the Charles Schwab Challenge, as he did not cut with +3, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he had placed T5 at AT&T Byron Nelson, was T8 at the Masters, T3 at Valspar Championship, and finished the Genesis Open in 6th place.

With such results, it’s no surprise that USA bookie list Thomas as one of the most likely winners of the upcoming tournament, and it’s hard to find a solid reason to doubt that.

Jon Rahm – 14/1

Jon Rahm is the defending US Open champion, winning the event in 2021 with -6. Last year, Rahm produced a stunning finish at the US Open, so he is definitely a man to watch; however, considering the US Open heads to a different course this time out, we might take his past achievements in the tournament with a grain of salt.

Rahm has had a very up-and-down season, producing a mixture of good and somewhat iffy results. He placed T3 at Farmers Insurance Open in January and has not posted another top-10 until the Mexico Championship, which he won at the start of May.

Rahm has since attended PGA Championship, where he could only manage a T48, albeit he has improved at the Memorial Tournament, where he placed T10. Still, he came -9 short of Horschel at the tournament, so his top-10 is hardly convincing.

The Spaniard is an excellent player and easily one of the most talented individuals in the field. However, defending the title is not easy, and Rahm would want to be in better form than he is.

Don’t get us wrong. Rahm is good, but we feel like the odds to win the US Open golf 2022 on him are a bit too low.

Past Winners of the Tournament

  • 2021 – Jon Rahm
  • 2020 – Bryson DeChambeau
  • 2019 – Gary Woodland
  • 2018 – Brooks Koepka
  • 2017 – Brooks Koepka

Time and Date of the Event

The US Open is set to kick off on Thursday, June 16 and run for 4 days, ending on Sunday, June 16. The tournament will take place at the world-renowned Country Club for the first time since 1988, which will only add to the excitement of the Major.

As one of the most prestigious golf tournaments of the year, the US Open will be well-covered by all sporting TV channels, and you won’t struggle to find live streams of the event either. Alternatively, you can also use one of the top-rated golf sportsbooks, which offer live stream options and provide you with adequate tournament coverage.

Using one of the in-play sportsbooks to watch the event isn’t required, but if you plan to bet on the event in-play, we recommend you to visit a top-rated bookmaker William Hill or one of many great golf bookies!

Sam Burns to win – 28/1

Sam Burns is priced as high as 28/1 to win the US Open, making him one of the most interesting players we must add to our list of US Open golf 2022 predictions. He has 4 wins across 13 months, which doesn’t seem great, but there is more to that figure.

Of the 4, Burns has collected 2 wins over his last 6 starts, including the Charles Schwab Challenge and Valspar Championship. Moreover, he has placed T20 at PGA Championship and was T4 last week at the Canadian Open.

With those results, it’s more than fair to say that Burns has plenty of form, the right game, and ticks all the right trend boxes. The current no.9 in the world ranked first in Greens in Regulation in his run to T4 at the Canadian Open, and if he can keep his wheels spinning, the 25-year-old will be a serious challenger for the US Open title.

Justin Rose to Win – 60/1

The current 2022 US Open golf betting odds show Justin Rose as a 60/1 outsider, which seems too generous in our book. He placed 5th in his US Open debut in 2003 and lifted the trophy 10 years later, in 2013.

Admittedly, Rose is not one of the biggest names heading to the US, but he is what many would consider a US Open specialist and seems a bit underestimated at the offered odds to win the US Open golf 2022. He placed third at Pebble Beach in 2019 and has shown solid form lately.

Most notably, Rose placed 4th at the Canadian Open and was T13 at PGA Championship. His other most recent solid performance came way back at the Farmers Insurance Open (T6), albeit, despite a streak of underwhelming showings, we have to rank his past results higher.

At 60/1, Rose is an excellent longshot pick and someone who deserves to be added to our US Open golf 2022 predictions list.

Max Homa to Win – 35/1

Last but not least, we have Max Homa to win the US Open at 35/1. The 31-year-old has taken the week off to rest and prepare himself for the US Open, but even though he did not attend the Canadian Open, it’s easy to consider Homa as one of the favourites to win the US Open.

The offered golf US Open 2022 odds might not indicate that, but Homa is one of the players we’re most excited about ahead of the Major. He placed T5 at the Memorial, was T23 at Charles Schwab, was T13 at PGA Championship, and Homa did not disappoint at Wells Fargo Championship, which he won with -8.

But despite his incredible results, many people don’t seem to trust Homa. Although you could argue that he overperformed, his T5 at the Memorial did not come out of the blue, especially considering he won the Wells Fargo just a month prior.

Homa is a highly talented player that is in great form. And that’s all you can ask from a potential winner of the US Open. At 35/1, Homa offers plenty of value; therefore, we must add him to our list of golf US Open predictions for 2022.

Golf US Open Predictions 2022 – Bonus Pick

For our final prediction, we’re on Joaquin Niemann at 33/1, which seems like a fair price. Although he has yet to make a splash as a Major, he has been improving over the last 12 months. He has already picked up a win this season (Genesis Invitational), to which he added another strong finish at the Memorial (third).

Prediction: Joaquin Niemann to win – 33/1

Our US Open Golf 2022 Predictions

  1. Sam Burns to win – 28/1 (e/w)
  2. Justin Rose to win – 60/1 (e/w)
  3. Max Homa to win – 35/1 (e/w)
  4. Joaquin Niemann to win – 33/1 (e/w)

That concludes our 2022 US Open betting preview, providing you with 4 expert betting picks for the season’s third Major. Before placing your bets, make sure that you’re betting only with the top-rated golf bookies with the best odds, and remember if you can claim any online welcome bonuses or promotions if you’re eligible for them!
