The Grand National Winner Corach Rambler Has Retired
Corach Rambler, the celebrated winner of the 2023 Grand National, has officially retired in May 2024. The 10-year-old horse, who finished third in this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, was among the favorites for another victory at Aintree but unseated his rider at the first fence.
Career Highlights
Corach Rambler is a two-time winner at the Cheltenham Festival. His final race took place at Punchestown last month, where he pulled up.
Trainer Lucinda Russell expressed mixed emotions about the retirement decision, describing it as “laced with sadness” but also “a joyous one.”
“Corach Rambler will always be a special horse for us; we owe him so much,”
Russell said. “More than anything, we want him to go out at the top, in excellent physical condition, and able to hopefully enjoy a long and happy retirement.”
Achievements
Corach Rambler won seven of his 18 races, earning more than £750,000 in prize money. Russell praised the horse’s remarkable ability to “beat equine millionaires” despite costing only £17,000, saying it “gave hope to any owner and trainer that they can compete no matter what their budget.”
“He will forever be remembered for his Grand National victory, but it should not be forgotten that he had an excellent record at Cheltenham,”
Russell added.
Final Thoughts
Russell acknowledged that some might be surprised by the decision to retire Corach Rambler at the age of 10, as he could have continued racing. However, she emphasized the importance of doing what is best for the horse, given his significant public following. “We feel we have a great responsibility with a horse with his public following to do the best thing for him,” she concluded.
